Kannapolis Cannon Ballers News Release
HICKORY, N.C. (June 23, 2014) - Hickory's starting pitcher Akeem Bostick spun five scoreless frames to set the tone in a shutout win over the Kannapolis Intimidators, 2-0, on Monday at L.P. Frans Stadium. It's just the third time this season that Kannapolis (32-40, 3-2 Second Half) has been shut out.
Bostick (4-3) was virtually untouchable after allowing singles to the game's first two hitters, retiring 14 straight Intimidators batters through 5.0 innings. He struck out the side in order in the second and fourth innings on his way to seven strikeouts, earning the win. Relievers Ryne Slack, Jose Valdespina and Cody Kendall combined for 4.0 scoreless frames to keep the shutout in tact with Kendall earning the save (7).
Hickory second baseman Evan Van Hoosier led off the bottom of the first with a home run (6). Van Hoosier opened the third inning with a double down the left field line and later scored for a 2-0 advantage.
The Intimidators threatened to break the shut out in the sixth inning when Hickory's Ryne Slack walked the three straight batters with two outs to load the bases, but Jose Valdespina came on to retire Danny Hayes to end the threat. Kannapolis added one more hit, a Hayes single with two outs in the ninth, but never put another runner in scoring position.
Kannapolis starter Robinson Leyer (4-4) spun 5.0 innings, allowing two runs on six hits - including the Van Hoosier home run - while walking two and striking out four while taking the loss. Relievers Dylan Chavez (2.0 IP) and Brett Bruening (1.0 IP) combined for three perfect frames out of the bullpen.
Kannapolis sends Hickory native Tyler Barnette to the mound in his hometown on Tuesday at 7:00 p.m. for the second game of this 4-game series. The Intimidators return to CMC-NorthEast Stadium on Friday, June 27, to open a 7-game home stand.
