TONIGHT'S MATCH-UP
RHP Alex McRae (3-3, 3.83) vs. RHP Max Povse (2-1, 2.21)
McRae: Surrendered two runs on seven hits over 6.0 IP with 6 K and 2 BB in 5/31 ND @ LWD (4-3 Power/10)
Povse: Gave up a run on three hits over 7.0 IP with 7 K and 0 BB in 5/31 ND @ HIC (2-1 Crawdads/10)
THE LEAD OFF: West Virginia downed Rome in game one of the four-game series 6-5 on Thursday night at State Mutual Stadium. The Power got out to an early lead thanks to an RBI single from Taylor Gushue in the fourth and a two-run homer from Cole Tucker in the fifth. Rome came back to within a run until Gushue hit an RBI triple in the sixth and scored on a Tito Polo sac fly. The Braves again came to within a run after drawing five walks in the sixth. In the seventh, Jordan Luplow hit an RBI double to give West Virginia a 6-4 lead. Rome again fought back to within on but Nick Neumann earned the save to hand Stephen Tarpley his third win in as many games this year.
WHEN IN ROME...: The Power and Braves continue their only series of the year with game two tonight.. Last year, the two clubs played 11 games with the Power winning the season series 7-4. The Power are 22-18 all-time against Atlanta's Class-A affiliate and haven't lost a season series to the Braves since 2009. Alex McRae looks for his third win of the season in tonight's game. The Wisconsin native has put up four quality starts this season.
DESTINY IN OUR HANDS: West Virginia has 16 games remaining in the first half and are currently 2.5 games behind the Hickory Crawdads for first place in the division. If West Virginia wins all of the remaining games this half they will guarantee a postseason berth for the first time since 2013. The Power and Crawdads will meet for a three-game series at Appalachian Power Park to conclude the first half.
SELFLESSNESS: Sacrifice bunts have been a key part of West Virginia's offense through the first 54 games of the season. The Power have laid down 40 total sacrifice bunts this season, the most in affiliated baseball. The 2015 Power are on pace to register 103 sacrifice bunts this year. Pablo Reyes leads the team with seven sacrifice bunts while Cole Tucker and Tito Polo each have six.
...AND WE KNOW IT: West Virginia is 10-3-2 in series this season and can guarantee at least a split tonight with a win against Rome. The Power have not lost a series since dropping three-of-four at the beginning of May against Greensboro.
SU-CHY TO THE GAME: West Virginia right fielder Michael Suchy is currently riding a six-game hit streak after a 1-for-3 performance last night. During his hit streak, Suchy is hitting .522 (12-for-23) thanks to five consecutive multi-hit games.
WE'RE RUNNING OUT OF BREAD: West Virginia pitchers struck out ten Rome Braves in Thursday night's victory on the road. It was the third consecutive game with ten strikeouts and the fourth straight in double-digit strikeouts. On Monday, the Power struck out 18 batters. All told, Power pitchers rank sixth in the league with 424 strikeouts. Sunday's starter Austin Coley leads the team with 54 strikeouts.
POWER PROMO UPDATE- JUNE 13: The Power will be celebrating Chuck's Birthday with a headphone giveaway to the first 1,000 fans presented by 98.7 The Beat and Renaissance Dental. Additionally, the popular national act ZOOperstars will entertain the fans throughout the 7:05 p.m. game against Augusta.
POWER POINTS: West Virginia is 15-13 when playing on the road in 2015...Monday's two-hitter was the second time the Power pitchers have thrown a two-hitter this year (May 18 in Hickory)...Colten Brewer and John Sever's 18 combined strikeouts on Monday was the most in a nine-inning game in franchise history...Tyler Filliben has reached base in 18 consecutive games...Michael Suchy is currently riding a season-best six-game hit streak.
AROUND THE ORGANIZATION: Pittsburgh was off yesterday and open a series in Atlanta beginning at 7:35 p.m. tonight...Indianapolis tallied four hits and were shutout by Lehigh Valley 8-0...Willy Garcia hit a two-run double in the first inning and Angel Sanchez tossed six innings in Altoona's 3-1 win...All hitters in Bradenton's lineup had a hit and the Marauders went 8-for-20 with runners in scoring position in their 7-3 win over Fort Myers.
