"Rally" Dogs Bite Tourists Late
June 5, 2015 - South Atlantic League (SAL1)
Asheville Tourists News Release
CHARLESTON, SC-- For the first six innings on Thursday night the Asheville Tourists dominated every facet of their series opener against the Charleston RiverDogs. Asheville stacked together base hits, stole bases, made plays defensively, and held Charleston scoreless. Unfortunately, a full game is nine innings and the latter stages belonged to the home team.
The Tourists took a 4-0 lead into the top of the seventh. In the blink of an eye, their lead disappeared. The RiverDogs plated four runs in the frame using a Tourists fielding error to spark the rally. Jorge Mateo's two-run triple was the key hit.
In the bottom of the eighth, Charleston not only took their first lead, they bettered their seventh inning output. Ten batters and five runs later, Asheville found themselves on the wrong side of a 9-4 score. It turned so quickly the team seemed stunned.
Despite their late inning misfortune, Asheville mounted a respectable rally in the top of the ninth. They loaded the bases and plated a run via a wild pitch. A sacrifice fly made it 9-6, but that was as close as the Tourists would come.
Logan Sawyer was exception in just his third start of the year. The Tourists righty held Charleston scoreless through five innings, walked only one, and struck out four. Asheville used a run in the second, one in the third, and two in the fourth to build their early lead; although they failed to capitalize on a few chances to come away with more.
The RiverDogs were led by Collin Slaybaugh. The catcher went 4-for-4 including a three run double in the bottom of the eighth to break the game open. Asheville's Max White clubbed his fourth Home Run of the season in the loss. The four-run lead is the biggest lead the Tourists have let slip away in a loss this season.
With three straight losses Asheville will attempt to right the ship on Friday night. The first pitch is scheduled for 7:05pm.
