Augusta GreenJackets News Release
AUGUSTA, GA: Friday night, the Augusta GreenJackets and the Lexington Legends squared off for another battle at Lake Olmstead Stadium. As the crowd rolled in receiving their free Shepeard Community Blood Center Stadium cups the GreenJackets prepared to bounce back from a thirteen-inning loss on Thursday night. Pat Young (2-0 ERA 4.91) took the mound against Lexington's Nik Stephenson (1-5 ERA 4.78). The GreenJackets broke open the game early by putting up eight runs in the first four innings. The GreenJackets went on to claim the victory with a score of twelve to one.
The start of the ball game Friday night had a lot of noise from the crowd but little coming from the crack of the bats from both club's offenses. That was until the game reached the bottom of the second inning. With two outs and Skyler Ewing standing on first base, shortstop Jeremy Sy ripped a ball to center field that got past center fielder Alfredo Escalera-Maldonado and made its way to the wall. Ewing made the run all the way from first base to score as Sy slid into third base safely. After a walk by Will Callaway, Johneshwy Fargas hit a ball that was misjudged by Escalera-Maldonado that allowed Sy to stroll easily into home and Callaway followed right behind him. Fargas was not complete with capitalizing on the Legend's mistakes. A throw that went past third base on an attempt to catch Fargas stealing third by catcher Chad Johnson ended up in left field. Fargas quickly made the turn from third base and scored for the fourth and final GreenJackets run of the inning.
The Legends threaten to score in the top of the third inning when Chad Johnson reached third base off of a single from Alfredo Escalera-Maldonado. With two outs, pitcher Pat Young was able to force Ryan O'Hearn to ground into the four-three putout to end the inning.
Coming into tonight's game Cristian Paulino has been on a four game multiple hitting streak. During this streak he has added five RBIs to his stat sheet. Tonight during the bottom of the fourth inning, Paulino's bat stayed hot once again for the GreenJackets. With the bases loaded Paulino hit a ground ball double to left field that scored Sy and Fargas to add two runs to the GreenJackets already four run lead. Cristain Paulino now has nineteen RBIs and twelve doubles on the season. The GreenJackets were not ready to take their foot off the gas peddle in the fourth inning after the double by Paulino. Catcher Aramis Garcia added his own two RBI single by knocking in Relaford and Paulino. The GreenJackets led the Legends with a score of eight to zero after just four innings of play.
The GreenJackets lead increased to nine runs in the bottom of the fifth inning when Jeremy Sy scored his third run of the night by being batted in by second baseman Travious Relaford. The Legends were able to squeeze in a run in the top of the sixth inning. Alfred Escalera-Maldonado scored off of a single by right fielder Elier Hernandez. The Legends run made the score nine to one at the end of six and half innings.
With all the offensive firepower being provided by the GreenJackets offense, the strong pitching performance by Pat Young was somewhat overlooked. Pat Young pitched six complete innings on the night and completely shut down the Legends offense for the first five innings of his start. Young left the game with allowing six hits, one earned run, and striking out five batters. Young also picked up his second victory of the season for his efforts on Friday night.
With an eight run lead the GreenJackets tacked on three more runs in the bottom of the eighth inning. Jonah Arenado earned his twenty-eighth RBI of the season after a single that scored Cristian Paulino. Now fasting forward two batters and the bases loaded, Jeremy Sy hit into a force out at second base that gave Aramis Garcia to opportunity to cross home plate. Will Callaway joined in on the GreenJackets RBI parade by singling to score Jonah Arenado for the GreenJackets final run of the game.
The GreenJackets walked away with their biggest margin of victory on the season by out scoring the Legends by eleven runs. The scoreboard final line read, twelve runs, fifteen hits, and one error for the Augusta GreenJackets (26-28) and one run, seven hits, and two errors for the (24-31) Lexington Legends.
