Hickory Crawdads News Release
Lakewood, NJ - A scuffling Hickory Crawdads offense broke through for a big game Thursday night, as the 'Dads scored 8 runs to back a great start from Collin Wiles in an 8-3 win over the Lakewood BlueClaws at FirstEnergy Park.
The Crawdads entered the series opener in New Jersey having scored three total runs over their previous 32 innings played. The 'Dads bats were able to top that in a single frame on Thursday, as the club used 6 hits to plate 5 runs in the 6th and propel them to the series opening victory.
Eight of the nine starting batters reached base safely at least once in the contest, with five different players ending with a multi-hit game. Jose Cardona led the way finishing 3-5 with a double, 2 RBI, 2 stolen bases, and a run scored. Marcus Greene ended the game 2-3 with a home run, three runs scored, and two walks, while Jairo Beras went 2-4 with a double, an RBI, and a walk in his first game back with the team.
It was the BlueClaws who struck first on the night, using a pair of infield hits to plate a run in the 1st for a 1-0 score. That would be all Wiles would allow however, as the Hickory hurler tied a career high with 7 innings pitched while allowing one run on four hits, one walk, and three strikeouts.
The 'Dads offense was able to tie the game at 1-1 in the 4th. Greene led off the inning with a single to left, advanced to second base on a wild pitch, took third on a fly ball to center, and finally scored on a throwing error by Lakewood center fielder Carlos Tocci.
The score remained tied until the Crawdads breakout 6th inning, which saw all nine batters step to the plate to give the 'Dads a 6-1 lead. Greene kick started the rally with a one-out, solo home run to left for his fifth long ball of the year. That began a string of five straight hits for Hickory, with Rock Shoulders and Beras lining singles, Cardona driving in a run on an RBI double, Isiah Kiner-Falefa picking up an RBI single, and Michael De Leon finishing the scoring with an RBI base knock of his own. The six total hits in the frame set a new single-inning high for the Crawdads this season, while the five runs scored tied the club's season best.
The 'Dads tacked on to their advantage with a 2-out, RBI single by Cardona in the 7th and a 2-out, RBI double from Beras in the 9th to stretch the lead to 8-1. Lakewood used a Crawdads error and three singles to score a pair of unearned runs in the bottom of the 9th before Hickory reliever Adam Parks shut the door to give the 'Dads the 8-3 win.
Wiles (6-2) earned the victory for his standout performance, while BlueClaws starter Ranfi Casimiro (2-4) took the loss after allowing four runs, three earned, on eight hits over 5.1 IP.
The win keeps the Crawdads (35-18) 2.5 games up in the South Atlantic League Northern Division, with 16 games remaining in the first half. The 'Dads and BlueClaws (25-26) will face off again on Friday in game two of the four-game series at 7:05 pm.
