Lexington Legends News Release

(AUGUSTA, Ga.) The Lexington Legends scored the tie-breaking run on a balk in the top of the 13th inning, and Brandon Downes' diving catch with two outs and two runners on in the bottom of the 13th preserved the win as the Legends got past the Augusta GreenJackets 3-2 Thursday night at Lake Olmstead Stadium.

The Legends took a 1-0 lead in the second inning on a single by Wander Franco and a double by Downes, who had been out of the lineup since May 18 due to a leg injury.

Augusta took the lead with two runs in the bottom of the second. Skyler Ewing led off with a single, moved to second on a ground out by John Riley and scored on a double by Matt Pare. After two walks loaded the bases, Cristian Paulino singled, scoring Pare with the go-ahead run.

The Legends tied it in the third on a single by Humberto Arteaga and a double by Alfredo Escalera. Arteaga, who also had a double, extended his hitting streak to 12 games.

The score remained 2-2 until the top of the 13th. With two out and the bases empty, Wander Franco singled up the middle and moved to third on a single by Chad Johnson, who also was returning to action after an injury. Johnson was sidelined April 15 due to a high ankle sprain.

With Downes at the plate, Augusta reliever Jake McCasland was called for a balk, and Franco scored the go-ahead run. Augusta put two men on base with two outs in the bottom of the 13th, but Downes made a diving catch on Andrew Cain's line drive to end the game.

Emilio Ogando (3-3) picked up the win. He allowed two hits and no runs in four and two-thirds innings of relief after entering the game in the bottom of the ninth. Jake Newberry got the final out for his third save.

McCasland (0-2) was the losing pitcher.

The second game of the four-game series will be played Friday night. First pitch is set for 7:05 p.m.
