Game One:
Coming off two wins, Red Wings starter Tyler Duffey took the mound and threw two one-two-three innings against the Knights. It was not until a double off the bat of Kevan Smith in the top of the third inning that a hit was recorded for either team. Smith was stranded at second after a strikeout and a ground out, leaving the score 0-0.
Charlotte starter Miguel Chalas (0-3) made his third start of the season and did not give up a hit to the Red Wings until a two-out base hit by James Beresford to left field in the third inning. Eric Fryer followed Beresford and knocked in the first run of the game with a base hit to right field, scoring Doug Bernier who reached on an error The unearned run gave the Wings a 1-0 lead going into the fourth inning.
Jose Martinez's two-out double down the third baseline in the bottom of the fourth inning gave the Wings their third hit of the game, but Martinez was stranded at second base.
Duffey (3-4) struck out two and fielded a slow roller down the third base line to help the Wings get out of the top of the fifth inning without a run being scored.
Taking the mound in the bottom of the fifth for Charlotte, Dan Jennings gave up a hit to Bernier to put him on base for the second time. But the Knights turned a double play on a ground ball by Aaron Hicks to clear the bases. Beresford's second two-out base hit of the day was not enough for the Wings to gain momentum.
Chalas's line: four innings pitched, three hits, one unearned run, one walk, and two strikeouts. He threw 62 pitches, 44 for strikes.
Duffey came back out for the sixth inning with a one-run lead and gave up a leadoff double to Chris Curley, putting the tying run in scoring position. Duffey forced three pop flies, two to Hicks in center and one to Reynaldo Rodriguez at first, to get the Wings out of trouble in top of the sixth.
Matt Davidson reached the basepaths for the third time after knocking a base hit to center field off of Duffey in the top of the seventh. The Wings put away the next three Knights to win the game, 1-0.
Duffey's line: seven innings pitched, four hits, no runs, one walk, and four strikeouts. He threw 92 pitches, 60 for strikes. The complete game shutout for Duffey extended his streak of not giving up an earned run to three starts (22 1/3 innings). The Wings out-hit the Knights 5-4. Beresford had a pair of singles, the team-leading 26th multi-hit game of the season.
Game Two:
Greg Peavey made his Frontier Field debut in the second game, and allowed two first inning hits - but his defense helped keep the Knights off the scoreboard. Shortstop Argenis Diaz threw out Micah Johnson at third base when Johnson tried to advance on a grounder, and Aaron Hicks threw a strike home from center field to stop Tyler Saladino from scoring. Peavey struck out Tyler Colvin to get out of the frame.
After a quick inning for Charlotte starter Brad Penny, Peavey gave up a lead-off single to Trayce Thompson in the top of the second inning. Thompson made his way around the bases after stealing second and tagging on two pop flies to score the first run of the game. The Knights took a 1-0 lead heading into the bottom of the second inning.
A line shot to right field by Wilkin Ramirez skipped passed Colvin and rolled to the wall, putting Ramirez in scoring position with one out in the bottom of the second. Ryan Wheeler's ground ball to first moved Ramirez to third base, but he was stranded there when Penny forced a ground out to end the inning. The Knights maintained their one run lead through two innings.
Jason Coats knocked his sixth home run of the season just out of Oswaldo Arcia's reach over the right field wall with two outs in the top of the third inning. With that, the Knights extended their lead to 2-0.
In the bottom of the third inning, Hicks hit a one-out double down the first baseline off of Penny for the Wings' third hit of the game. James Beresford's ground out to shortstop Drew Garcia was enough to move Hicks from second to third, but Penny struck out Eric Fryer and left the Wings scoreless through three.
Reynaldo Rodriguez led off the bottom of the fourth inning with a bloop hit to shallow right field. Arcia followed up Rodriguez's base hit with one of his own, leaving two men on base and no outs for Ramirez. On a 1-2 pitch from Penny, Ramirez hit a three-run shot to left field to put the Wings ahead, 3-2. Ramirez's home run was his second of this season and gave him 10 RBI.
Relieving Peavey, Mark Hamburger came in at the top of the sixth inning to face the middle of the Knights lineup. Hamburger forced two pop flies to Arcia in right field. Coming in to face the left-handed Colvin, Ryan O'Rourke took the mound with two outs and struck him out looking to retire the side.
Peavey allowed five hits, two earned runs and a walk over five innings, striking out three. He threw 93 pitches, 62 for strikes.
Michael Tonkin pitched the seventh inning, yielding a one-out walk to George Kottaras. Pinch-runner Chris Curley moved to second base on a wild pitch, then scored on a single by Chris Marrero to tie the score at 3-3.
Penny allowed three earned runs and six hits over six innings, striking out five. Penny threw 79 pitches, 55 for strikes. Matt Lindstrom came on in the bottom of the seventh, and gave up a lead-off single to Ryan Wheeler. Diaz bunted pinch-runner Eric Farris to second base, and a groundout by Carlos Paulino put Farris at third with two out. Hicks ran up a full count against Lindstrom, before taking a called third strike and sending the game into extra innings.
A.J. Achter notched three strikeouts over two innings after coming on in the eighth inning.
Maikel Cleto took over in the bottom of the ninth, and allowed a scorching line drive single off the wall in right by Arcia. Cleto got two flyball outs, then a sliding catch by Colvin in right field took away a hit from Diaz and stranded Arcia.
Lester Oliveros took over on the mound in the top of the 10th inning, and used two strikeouts to work around a pair of Knights hits. Oliveros got in a jam again in the 11th inning, allowing a walk and single with two outs and a wild pitch that put the go ahead run at third base. Micah Johnson hit a grounder up the middle that Diaz dove and stopped, but Diaz' flip to second for the force was off-target and the Knights went ahead 4-3 on a play ruled an infield hit.
But Ramirez had one more magic moment in his bat. With Arcia at first with one out in the bottom of the 11th inning, Ramirez drilled another home over the wall in left to provide a great conclusion to the day and the series. Oliveros picked up the win to improve to 3-2, while Cleto fell to 3-2.
Arcia and Ramirez each had three hits.
