Rochester Red Wings News Release
Rochester, NY- The second game of the Sunday matinee took 11 innings, despite being scheduled for seven.
It would take the Rochester Red Wings (39-36) over three hours before a walk-off two-run home run by Wilkin Ramirez in the bottom of the eleventh would seal the victory over the Charlotte Knights (43-33) at Frontier Field.
The Knights would take the early 1-0 lead in the second, when Trayce Thompson would trot from third on a sacrifice fly by Chris Marrero.
The Wings would look to answer in the bottom half of the second when Wilkin Ramirez would double to the left center gap with one out and advance to third on an unassisted grounder to first. Argenis Diaz would follow up with a grounder to short to end the inning, and leave Ramirez stranded at third.
Charlotte would extend their lead to 2-0, when Jason Coats would scarcely clear the right field fence in the third inning, earning his seventh home run of the season.
Wilkin Ramirez would give Rochester a 3-2 lead in the fourth when he blasted a three-run homer off Knights starter Brad Penny, scoring Rodriguez and Arcia.
Wings starter Greg Peavey would be relieved by Mark Hamburger to start the sixth. Peavey allowed two runs, five hits, one walk, striking out three. Hamburger retired two batters before handing over bullpen duties to Ryan O'Rourke. O'Rourke struck out Tyler Colvin for the third out.
Reliever Michael Tonkin would enter the seventh in an attempt to earn the save for Rochester, however after a walk, to George Kottaras and a RBI single by Chris Marrero, the game was tied 3-3.
In the bottom half of the seventh, the Knights bullpen would see action. Matt Lindstrom would enter the game to relieve starter Brad Penny. Penny allowed three earned runs, on six hits,
striking out five. Lindstrom would walk the first batter-Ryan Wheeler, followed by two ground outs and a strikeout of Aaron Hicks to push the game into extra innings.
Extra innings would bring Wings reliever A.J Achter out of the bullpen to begin the eighth., and Lester Oliveros later in the tenth.
The Eleventh inning was not favorable for Oliveros. After a wild pitch, Knights Micah Johnson singled to short, scoring Kevan Smith to give Charlotte the 4-3 edge. Despite the 4-3 deficit, the Red Wings would pull off the victory with a 2-run home run by Wilkin Ramirez in the bottom of the eleventh. ?
