Down East Wood Ducks News Release
KINSTON, NC - A ninth-inning home run from Frederick's (14-22, 49-56) catcher Stuart Levy lifted the Keys over the Wood Ducks (11-25, 46-60) by a 6-4 final on Friday night. Chuck Leblanc collected two RBI singles in the loss as the Woodies collected ten hits.
The go-ahead blast in the ninth erased a 4-3 Down East lead held since the fifth inning. The Woodies scored a run in each frame from innings two through five. Eric Jenkins opened the scoring with a two-out, two-strike base hit in the second to bring home Brendon Davis.
Josh Altmann would connect on his 19th homer of the season in the third - a solo blast to left field to push the lead to 2-0. Meanwhile starter Jason Bahr retired the first time through the order in the minimum against the Keys.
Frederick would put a three-spot on the board in the fourth thanks to a pair of homers from Wilson Garcia and Preston Palmeiro. Yet the Wood Ducks would respond in the bottom half of the frame with Leblanc's first RBI single - up the middle to score Davis.
Leblanc would notch his second on a single down the right field line in the fifth to score Altmann (who was hit by his ninth pitch of the month to reach). The DEWDs led 4-3 for the next third of the game.
Blake Bass worked an inning and two-thirds of scoreless work to earn his first hold of the season. Another right-hander followed in Kaleb Fontenot who also earned a hold recording three outs - two with K's. Locke St. John would mark the final out of the eighth inning and returned for the four-out save in the ninth.
A single, a hit batter, and a 3-1 count led to Levy's home run to left to take the lead for good. In the bottom half, Leody Taveras would reach on an error but the next three Woodies went down in order to Tyler Erwin for this 13th save.
Down East continues the series on Saturday with the newest addition to the team, Rollie Lacy, making his first start in the Rangers organization. He was acquired in the package of a trade with the Cubs in exchange for Cole Hamels at the big league level. First pitch is scheduled for 6:00 p.m. at Grainger Stadium.
