Down East Wood Ducks News Release
KINSTON, NC - A lack of timely hitting plagued the Wood Ducks (11-24, 46-59) in a 3-2 defeat in ten innings to the Hillcats (19-15, 48-53) on Thursday night. Down East finished 1-for-13 with runners in scoring position and spoiled a quality start from Emerson Martinez.
The right-hander tossed six shutout innings with just two broken bat hits allowed. He only needed a pair of strikeouts to go along with eight ground ball outs. He took the no decision despite exiting with the lead.
Ricky Valencia connected on his first homer at Grainger Stadium this season to open the scoring in the second inning. It was one of only three hits the Woodies would collect on Lynchburg starter Sam Hentges.
The game's drama did not come until the later stages when the Hillcats tied the game in the seventh, and took the lead in the eighth. Melvin Novoa opened the bottom of the eighth with a single and the Woodies attempted to use small ball to bring home the tying run.
Brendon Davis dropped down a sac bunt that became a hit when he hustled ahead of the throw to first. Next, Leody Taveras also dropped a bunt that Lynchburg catcher Li-Jen Chu attempted to throw to second, but Davis again beat it out.
The next two batters were retired with the bases loaded before Josh Altmann lined a single into left field to tie the game. Altmann now has three of the Woodies' seven hits with the bases loaded for the entire season.
Both teams went scoreless in the ninth and set up the Wood Ducks first extra inning game of the half. Jairo Beras worked his second inning and only allowed the placed runner to score (unearned) and give the Hillcats the lead.
Down East went down 1-2-3 in the bottom of the tenth to drop the contest and the series to Lynchburg. The homestand continues on Friday with the Frederick Keys to open a three-game series at 7:00 p.m. Right-hander Jason Bahr will take the start for the DEWDs with fireworks coming after the game from Grainger Stadium.
