Dash Edge Red Sox in Friday's Series Opener

SALEM, Va. - Thanks to a four-run first inning and a perfect outing from Lincoln Henzman, the Dash sneaked past the Red Sox 6-5 on Friday night at Haley Toyota Field.
Winston-Salem (22-13, 63-42) quickly jumped on Red Sox starter Jake Thompson (4-10) in the series opener. Luis Gonzalez began the contest with a double down the right-field line, and, after Laz Rivera was hit by a pitch, Blake Rutherford extended his hitting streak to 11 games with a single up the middle to load the bases.
Then, with Yermin Mercedes at the plate, Thompson fired a wild pitch that allowed Gonzalez to score from third. Mercedes would reach after getting hit by a pitch that clipped his jersey top, but Thompson struck out Gavin Sheets and Ti'Quan Forbes to create a bases-loaded, two-out situation. However, JJ Muno followed with a two-run single to left-center, and Yeyson Yrizarri capped off the inning with an RBI single to right.
Meanwhile, Henzman was dominant in his fourth start in a Dash uniform, retiring all nine batters he faced. A fourth-round pick by the White Sox in 2017 out of the University of Louisville, Henzman struck out three of the first four hitters in the Red Sox (16-19, 48-55) lineup.
Gonzalez brought home another run in the fifth inning on a sacrifice fly to make it a 5-0 Winston-Salem lead before the Red Sox scored for the first time. Relieving Henzman, Drew Hasler (4-2), who ultimately picked up the win, tossed two scoreless innings before running into the trouble in the sixth inning. With two on and two out, Bobby Dalbec crushed his league-leading 25th homer to left-center, a three-run shot that cut the deficit to two.
But, Gonzalez responded in the top of the seventh against Joan Martinez by smashing a solo homer to right to make it a 6-3 contest. The former third-round pick out of the University of New Mexico has now posted three consecutive multi-hit games.
The Red Sox did not go out without a fight, though, plating two runs in the seventh to slash the lead to one. Connor Walsh registered a scoreless eighth, but he put runners at the corners with two outs in the final frame.
With C.J. Chatham at the plate, Walsh fired a 2-2 pitch into the dirt that was blocked by Dash catcher Yermin Mercedes. On the play, Tyler Hill broke toward second and Mercedes fired a bullet down to Forbes, who applied the tag on Hill to end the ballgame and seal a save for Walsh.
Winston-Salem continues its three-game set against the Red Sox on Saturday at 6:05 p.m. Left-hander John Parke (3-1, 3.16 ERA) takes the mound for the Dash against Salem righty Tanner Houck (5-11, 4.50 ERA).
