CAROLINA EDGES MYRTLE BEACH 1-0

The Carolina Mudcats edged the Myrtle Beach Pelicans 1-0 in Thursday's series finale from Five County Stadium. The game's only offense came when Weston Wilson homered to lead off the second inning. Myrtle Beach wound up stranding nine runners by going 0-for-10 with runners in scoring position. Muddies starter Cam Roegner scattered five hits and struck out three over five innings. Jorge Ortega pitched 2.2 scoreless before Daniel Brown got the final out of the eighth inning. Luke Barker pitched a perfect ninth for his 16th save. Manny Rondon worked four innings of one-run ball in a spot start. Tyler Peyton went 2.1 scoreless out of the bullpen and Jose Paulino tacked on 1.2 blank innings out of the bullpen.

CAN'T WIN IF YOU CAN'T SCORE

Myrtle Beach was shut out for the 16th time this season, including the second time in the last seven contests, with Thursday's 1-0 defeat to Carolina. Those 16 blankings are by far the most in the Carolina League, with only Lynchburg's 10 shutouts even remotely close to the Pelicans. The Birds' record for losses in a shutout game are the 17 zeroes the club suffered in 2003.

AN IMPERFECT 10

Thanks to their Thursday loss to Carolina, the Pelicans find themselves 10 games below .500 for the first time since the 2010 season. Myrtle Beach has lost eight of their last nine games, a stretch in which they have been outscored 42-18. The Birds have also suffered three consecutive series defeat for the first time since losing four in a row from June 11 through June 29.

FOUR SEASONS

On May 11, Myrtle Beach's bats exploded in a 9-6 victory over Buies Creek, setting off an extraordinarily good run whenever the club's offense produced. Over the Birds' next 65 games, which ran through Monday's series finale against Winston-Salem, the Pelicans scored at least four runs in a contest 27 times, winning 25 of those battles. However, Myrtle Beach has tallied at least four runs in two of their last four contests, losing both of those affairs. The Pelicans are still a strong 35-11 (.761) when compiling at least four runs.

YOUNG FOREVER

In the first four games following his July 7 promotion from Low-A South Bend to Myrtle Beach, Jared Young went just 2-for-15 (.133) with an RBI and three walks. However, the Prince George, British Columbia native seems to be starting to figure out the High-A level. Young is currently working on a 13-game on-base streak, batting 16-for-48 with two doubles, two home runs, eight RBIs and three walks to slash .333/.373/.500 over this run.

WALK OF LIFE

Myrtle Beach walked eight Mudcats on Wednesday,

matching the club's most in a game this season. The Birds followed that up with four free passes given out to the Muddies on Thursday. Over the first 76 games of the season, the Pelicans were issuing only 3.0 walks per nine innings (211 in 638.0 IP). However, over the last 28 contests, the Birds have handed out 100 free passes in 244.1 frames, a rate of 3.7 per nine innings.

THE REGRESSION MONSTER

Following a 4-3 win over Salem on June 10, Myrtle Beach boasted a 10-3 record in one-run games, the best such mark in the Carolina League. However, records in one-run games are mostly correlated with luck and timing, and it is extremely rare for squads to sustain success in these narrow contests over the course of a season. Thus, in nearly every single level across the history of baseball, almost every club posts records in one-run contests at or near .500. Sure enough, the regression monster has come back to bite the Birds. The Pelicans have played 11 games decided by one run since June 10 and lost nine of them, dropping their record to 12-12 in one-run affairs.

PELICAN POINTS

Andruw Monasterio has reached base in eight consecutive games, going 10-for-26 (.385/.484/.423) with a double, four walks and a hit by pitch during that stretch... Right-handed pitcher Rollie Lacy, who had made two starts for Myrtle Beach, was traded to the Texas Rangers Friday in the deal that netted the Chicago Cubs left-hander Cole Hamels... The Pelicans rank last in the Carolina League in runs (372), slugging percentage (.331), OPS (.646), doubles (140) and home runs (43).
