Erie SeaWolves News Release
The SeaWolves snapped a two-game losing skid on Saturday night at New Britain Stadium with an 8-2 win over the New Britain Rock Cats.
The SeaWolves broke the scoreless tie in the top of the fifth against Rock Cats starter Brett Jacobson. With one out, John Murrian singled, Jamie Johnson walked and Brandon Douglas singled loading the bases for Justin Henry. Henry grounded to first and Nate Hanson made the play to home getting the lead runner. Francisco Martinez followed with a two-out single to center, plating both Johnson and Douglas for a 2-0 Erie lead.
The Rock Cats came back to tie the game in the last of the fifth against Erie starter Jay Voss. Jair Fernandez led off with a double and Daniel Rohlfing singled putting runners on the corners for Deibinson Romero. Romero doubled home pinch runner Chris Herrmann making it a one-run game at 2-1. With Rohlfing on third, Mark Dolenc hit a sacrifice fly to center, scoring the runner, tying the game at 2-2.
Erie promptly regained in the top of the sixth against reliever Deolis Guerra. Audy Ciriaco led off with his team-leading 13th double. Michael Bertram singled high off the wall in right bringing home Ciriaco for a 3-2 lead. On the play, Bertram was called safe at second with a double, but a reversal of the call by the umpire crew led to Bertram and eventually Erie manager Chris Cron being ejected from the game.
In the seventh, Erie poured on the runs against Guerra. Murrian led off the inning and blasted a solo home run, his second, over the wall in left center for a 4-2 lead. Johnson followed and walked for the third time in the game. He then stole second and moved to third when Douglas reached on a Guerra error. With runners on the corners, Rawley Bishop sent a bouncer to third and Johnson came home to score when Romero made a high throw to the plate. Bishop picked up the RBI and Erie led 5-2. With Martinez hitting, a pair of wild pitches scored Douglas to make it 6-2 and moved Bishop into scoring position. Martinez singled home Douglas for his third RBI to make it 7-2. After Shawn Roof reached on an error, Michael Rockett singled home Martinez for an 8-2 Erie lead.
The Rock Cats would get no closer as relievers Zach Samuels and Chance Ruffin combined to toss the final two innings of the game scoreless.
Voss (2-2) earned his second win of the season allowing two runs on five hits with two walks while striking out a career-high eight in seven innings of work. It was his longest outing as a starter with the âWolves.
The SeaWolves look for the series win on Sunday afternoon at New Britain Stadium...1:35 First Pitch. RHP Mark Sorensen (5-3, 5.07 ERA) takes the mound for the SeaWolves against RHP Deinys Suarez (0-0, 6.75 ERA)
