TONIGHT: The Richmond Flying Squirrels and New Hampshire Fisher Cats will meet in game two of a three-game series...Flying Squirrels starter Justin Fitzgerald allowed five runs on eight hits in 3 1/3 innings and the Fisher Cats cruised to a 6-2 over Richmond in the series opener on Friday night in front of 6,945 fans at Northeast Delta Dental Stadium.
TONIGHT'S STARTERS: Right-hander Daryl Maday gets the start in game two of the series for the Flying Squirrels...Earned the win in his last outing 6/5 against Reading...Allowed three runs, two earned, on six hits in six innings...Struck out six batters and walked three...Five of the six hits he allowed were singles...Outing was his fourth quality start in 10 starts overall...Fourth consecutive start in which he went six innings or more...Win was his first since 5/9 at Bowie (four starts)...Victory was his first in six starts at The Diamond...Allowed the leadoff batter to reach in three of his six innings on the mound (scored twice)...Recorded six flyouts/popouts and four groundouts...Threw 95 pitches, 57 strikes...Threw 15 pitches or less in three of his six innings on the mound (1st, 2nd & 6th)...Threw 18 pitches or more in three of his six innings on the mound (3rd, 4th & 5th)...Threw first-pitch strikes to 13 of the 26 batters he faced...Is 1-2 with a 2.66 ERA in four starts on the road...Activated from the Disabled List 5/9...Was placed on the DL 5/2 due to pneumonia... GEORGIA ON MY MIND: Second baseman Charlie Culberson has homered in each of his last three games, becoming the first Flying Squirrels batter to accomplish that feat...The 22-year-old hit just one home run through his first 54 contests...It is the second time in Culberson's career that he has homered in three straight games...The Georgia native homered in three straight contests 7/11/10-7/13/10 while with Advanced-A San Jose...The former supplemental first-round pick hit a career-high 16 home runs last season with the Giants.
THE JOLLY ROGER: Outfielder Roger Kieschnick is batting .321 (36-for-112) over his last 29 games with six doubles, a triple, four home runs, 16 RBIs and 16 runs scored...The 24-year-old has 14 multi-hit games over that span which also includes a season-long eight-game hit streak...He has raised his batting average from .173 to .250 since 5/7.
GOING LONG: Second baseman Charlie Culberson and outfielder Roger Kieschnick each homered last night, marking the fourth time this season that the Flying Squirrels have hit multiple home runs in a game...The last multi-homer game for Richmond was 5/26 against Erie when Jose Flores and Justin Christian each homered in the bottom of the seventh inning...The team hit a season-high three homers 5/25 against Erie...The club has homered in three straight games for the second time this season...The Flying Squirrels also homered in three straight games 4/28-4/30...Richmond homered in five straight games last season 6/10/10-6/14/10 (four of the five games at Reading).
NO RUNNING: Catcher Aaron Lowenstein threw out another baserunner Thursday night, and the 25-year-old has now thrown out 16 baserunners in 21 attempts...His .762 throwing percentage leads all MiLB catchers with at least 21 attempts.
PITCHING IN: The Flying Squirrels pitching staff leads the Eastern League with a 2.88 ERA through 60 games, the only staff with a sub-three ERA...Richmond's 2.88 staff ERA is the third-lowest in all of MiLB, trailing the Advanced-A Clearwater Threshers (2.65) and Low-A Burlington Bees (2.73)...The pitching staff has logged a league-high 550 1/3 innings of work and has allowed a league-low 209 runs.
ON THE ROAD AGAIN AND AGAIN AND AGAIN: The Flying Squirrels are in a stretch where they will play 13 of 16 games on the road...The team is 6-8 through the first 14 games of that stretch including a 4-7 mark on the road...Overall, the club is 10-20 on the road, and is batting .197 (196-for-997) and averaging 3.07 runs per game (92R/30G) in 30 road contests...Richmond recently completed a stretch of playing 10 out of 13 games at home, going 8-5 over those 13 contests...The Flying Squirrels are 18-11 at home and are batting .253 (262-for-1,035) in 30 games at The Diamond while averaging 4.17 runs per game at home (125R/30G).
