Wolves Singed By Heat, 4-3, In Shootout

ROSEMONT, Ill.---Chicago Wolves right wing Darren Haydar tied the game, 3-3, with less than three minutes to play to force overtime, but the Abbotsford Heat came away with a 4-3 shootout win at the Allstate Arena Friday night.

Right wing Nigel Dawes was the only Wolves player to convert in the shootout, while goaltender Peter Mannino stopped three of Abbotsford's five attempts.

Haydar led the way in regulation with two goals, while left wing Andrew Kozek added the other tally for Chicago (25-22-2-4).

Abbotsford took its first lead of the game, 3-2, at 17:12 of the final frame when the puck bounced loose and landed alone below the left face-off circle. Center Matt Keith came streaking in and chipped it across for Stefan Meyer to tap past Mannino for his second goal of the game.

Haydar tied it up, 3-3, 29 seconds later when his shot flew past Heat goaltender Leland Irving and clanked up under the crossbar at 17:43 of the third frame.

Kozek gave Chicago to a 1-0 lead, 16:45 into the first period. Left wing Fredrik Pettersson collected the puck in the neutral zone and flipped a backhanded pass to Kozek streaking down the slot for a quick rip past Irving.

Abbotsford (23-20-2-5) drew even, 1-1, at 5:50 of the second period. A flurry of action in front of the net saw Mannino stop several shot attempts, but right wing Jon Rheault was eventually successful in popping a rebound past the netminder.

Haydar put the Wolves back on top, 2-1, at 9:13 of the third period. Haydar and center Ryan Garbutt moved in on a two-on-one before Garbutt slipped a pass across for Haydar, who roofed it over Irving.

Irving (20-15-2) turned aside 30 shots for Abbotsford in regulation and overtime, and thwarted four of Chicago's five shootout attempts.

Left wing Stefan Meyer knotted the score again, 2-2, 53 seconds later when Quintin Laing backhanded the puck from near the blueline to Meyer alone at the top of the crease, and Meyer pushed it past Mannino.

Mannino (12-12-3) made 28 saves in regulation and overtime for the Wolves.

The Wolves host the Peoria Rivermen at the Allstate Arena on Saturday at 7 p.m.
