Barons Edge Rivermen in 10-Round Shootout

All 10 Peoria Rivermen shooters were unable to score in the shootout as the Oklahoma City Barons edged out the Rivermen 2-1, Friday Night at Cox Convention Center. Jake Allen made 34 saves in regulation and stopped the first nine shooters in the shootout until Chris Vandevelde netted the game-winner in the tenth round.
With the shootout loss the Rivermen (29-17-2-2) earned a point and moved into a four-way-tie for first place in the West Division with Milwaukee, San Antonio, and Houston (62 pts).
The Rivermen opened the scoring in the first period with a 5-on-3 goal for the second night in a row. Phil McRae started the play from the right point and sent a pass down to Derek Nesbitt at the bottom of the right circle. Nesbitt's pass through the slot found Hensick at the bottom of the right circle and Hensick buried his third goal in his last two games into an empty net at 8:41. The goal extended Hensick's point streak to six games and gave him 14 on the year.
The Barons tied the game on a 5-on-3 of their own 2:21 into the second period. With Nick Drazenovic and Dean Arsene in the box, Alexandre Giroux blasted a one-timer from the top of the right circle off the post and in for his 26th of the year. Bryan Helmer and Brad Moran collected the assists on the equalizer.
A power play with 1:08 to go in regulation on Matt Marquardt's hooking penalty gave the Rivermen a chance to end it. The Rivermen failed convert on the 5-on-4 or with the remaining 52 seconds of the 4-on-3 in overtime, so the game went to a shootout.
After nine rounds, two crossbars and a shot of the side of the post, Vandevelde came in with speed in the tenth round and beat Allen with a wrist shot under the glove. Mark Cundari had a chance to extend the shootout, but was stopped by Martin Gerber, who stopped all 10 Rivermen shooters in the shootout and made 28 saves on 29 shots in regulation and overtime.
The Rivermen fell to 2-2 in shootouts this season and 3-0-0-1 overall in Oklahoma City.
