Syracuse Crunch News Release
Glens Falls, NY - Kyle Palmieri (1g, 2a) and Nate Guenin (0g, 3a) each had three points, Patrick Maroon stung his former team with two goals, J.P. Levasseur had 31 saves to secure his fourth shutout of the season and the Syracuse Crunch matched a season-high for goals, rolling to a 5-0 win over Adirondack tonight at the Glens Falls Civic Center. The win was the Crunch's first in six tries against the Phantoms this season.
The Crunch battle the AHL-leading Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins tomorrow night at 7:30 at The Oncenter War Memorial Arena.
The pace of the game started slowly, but picked up after the Crunch got into some early penalty trouble when David Laliberte was called for hooking 4:52 in and Mark Mitera for high-sticking at the 5:43 mark, putting Adirondack on a 5-on-3 advantage for 1:09.
The closest Adirondack would come on the two-man advantage came with a slapper off the post about halfway into it, but the Crunch held strong and killed off both penalties to keep the game scoreless.
The Crunch built up some momentum after those kills and finally capitalized with the first of their three power play goals on the night with 1:21 left in the first when Josh Green fed Maroon in front of the cage and the 225-pound left wing lumbered a shot past Johan Backlund to give Syracuse the 1-0 lead, which they took into the first intermission.
Syracuse didn't wait long into the second stanza to grab a 2-0 lead when Guenin found Palmieri racing in down the slot, and the rookie right wing rifled a lightning quick wrister past Backlund to give the Crunch a two-tally advantage.
Just over four minutes later, the Crunch picked up their second power play marker when the puck pin-balled over to Maroon at the side of the cage, who got a stick on it and shoveled it over the goal line to make it a 3-0 game.
Matt Beleskey put the Crunch up 4-0 and notched his club's third goal of the period when he followed up Palmieri's rush to the net and punched in the rebound past an out-of-position Backlund at the 10:28 mark.
Mark Mitera capped the game's scoring at the 4:19 mark of the third, chopping a backhand bid by Backlund to extend the Crunch's lead to 5-0. The Crunch took two penalties in the game's final four minutes, but the PK was outstanding, not allowing a man-up goal on eight Adirondack opportunities.
