Adirondack Phantoms News Release
The Syracuse Crunch attempted to make up for their five game streak of losses to the Phantoms in one night and took down the Adirondack Phantoms 5-0 Friday night at the Glens Falls Civic Center. Patrick Maroon returned to Glens Falls for his time since being traded in late November and led the Crunch attack with a pair of goals. J.P. Levasseur racked up 31 saves for his fourth shutout of the year.
Adirondack had won all the previous games against the Crunch including sweeping all four games of the season series at Syracuse. But the Crunch were able to shut the door on a Phantoms 5-on-3 power play early in the first period with the score still 0-0 and built on that momentum from there. Danny Syvret blasted a power play shot off the post on that man advantage while the Phantoms generated several other chances to score as well. But, in the end, the Phantoms couldn't solve Levasseur nor the Crunch penalty kill as they ended the night going 0-for-8 on the man advantage.
The Phantoms also missed an opportunity to close to within one point of the Crunch in the standings. Syracuse now leads Adirondack by 5 points in the East Division.
Adirondack's record in their last 21 games now stands at 11-7-3 and their record under Head Coach Joe Paterson is 9-7-3.
Patrick Maroon would start the scoring for the Crunch late in the first period creating space on the back door and slamming in a cross-ice feed past Johan Backlund for a 1-0 lead.
Syracuse would score three times in the second period including Maroon's second goal of the game at the six minute mark on a tip from the slot that made it 3-0. Kyle Palmeri and Matt Beleskey also scored in the period for the Crunch. Beleskey's drive crashing the net midway through the second would be the last Backlund would allow as he was replaced by Michael Leighton.
Mark Mitera would close the scoring early in the third period on the power play for Syracuse as the Crunch finished the night with three power play goals against an Adirondack power play that had been extremely successful lately entering the game.
Maroon and fellow Crunch teammate David Laliberte were traded by the Flyers organization to the Anaheim Ducks system in late November in exchange for current Phantoms Danny Syvret and Rob Bordson.
The Phantoms blasted away on Levasseur in the third period but the Crunch goaltender was able to hold down the fort turning aside all 14 Phantoms drives in that period alone.
Adirondack and Syracuse will meet for the seventh time this season on Wednesday, February 16th in Glens Falls.
The Phantoms travel to Hamilton to take on the North Division leading Bulldogs, the affiliate of the Montreal Canadiens, Saturday evening at 5:00.
Adirondack will open a four game homestand on Sunday, February 13th.
Phantoms Notes: Scratches for the game included Marc-Andre Bourdon, Matt Clackson, Greg Moore and Logan Stephenson. Moore was one of only two Phantoms to have played in every game this year. Ben Holmstrom is now the only Phantom to have played in all 50 games. Eric Wellwood returned to the lineup after missing the last three games.
