Peoria Rivermen News Release
PEORIA, Il - Ondrej Pavelec improved to 3-0-0 against the Peoria Rivermen this season by making 33 saves in a 3-1 win for the Chicago Wolves in front of 4,611 fans at Carver Arena on Saturday night. In his three starts against Peoria, Pavelec has only allowed a total of three goals. His performance bested that of Manny Legace who was saddled with the loss despite making 26 saves.
The Rivermen controlled the opening minutes of the first but Pavelec made a number of strong saves, including robbing Carl Corazzini just 20 seconds in. It was Corazzini's first game with Peoria since being swapped from Springfield with Charles Linglet. Riley Holzapfel accounted for the only goal of the first period at 3:20 as a pass from Spencer Machacek sprung him on a breakaway against Legace. A quick snapshot from the hash-marks jumped over his shoulder and counted as Holzapfel's 10th of the season.
Eric Neilson fought twice in the opening 20 minutes after squaring off with Mike Hoffman at 3:49 and having to drop the gloves with Alex Brooks following a big hit at 18:53.
Chicago took a 2-0 lead on their first power play of the game at 3:24 of the second period. Jeff Hamilton shot left a rebound at the side of the goal for Clay Wilson sneaking in from the right point. The goal snapped a stretch of 11-straight penalties killed off by the Rivermen.
Peoria's Julian Talbot tapped one past Pavelec at 6:41 to cut the Wolves' lead in half. The play was setup by Jonas Junland who carried the puck from the red line around the entire offensive zone and just after circling the goal slid a pass to Talbot at the top of the crease. It was the 14th of the season for Talbot and the 16th assists for Junland.
That's as close as the Rivermen would get with Matt Anderson adding an insurance goal from behind the net at 16:54 of the second. He banked a puck off Legace and Andy Wozniewski and into the net to increase the Chicago lead back to two.
The Rivermen outshot the Wolves in two of the three periods, with both teams accounting for 14 shots in the middle frame. They outshot Chicago 34-29 overall and are now just 10-14-1 when registering more shots than their opponent. The Rivermen are now 3-4-0 against Chicago this season with their next meeting scheduled for March 6 at Carver Arena.
