Springfield Falcons News Release
The Springfield Falcons and Bridgeport Sound Tigers meet for the second time this season when they get together on Saturday night at the MassMutual Center starting at 7 pm. The Falcons lost to the Sound Tigers 4-1 back on December 19 when Springfield braved the snow on that night in heading to Bridgeport. The Falcons and Sound Tigers will meet twice more after tonight's contest as Bridgeport heads back to Springfield on March 13, followed by the Falcons heading back to Bridgeport on April 10.
The Falcons head into Saturday's action having earned at least a point in their last two games going 1-0-1-0 in that span. Springfield beat the Portland Pirates by a score of 6-3 on Tuesday night, followed by a 2-1 overtime loss against the Worcester Sharks on Friday night. Newly acquired Charles Linglet scored the Falcons' lone goal last night against Worcester, his first game with Springfield. Goaltender Devan Dubnyk was very steady between the pipes stopping 35 of 37 shots on goal. The Falcons will conclude their weekend in Providence on Sunday afternoon.
The Sound Tigers head into Springfield having earned at least a point in the standings in each of their last five games going 4-0-0-1 in that span. Bridgeport has a record of 32-17-3-3 good for 70 points and third place in the AHL's East Division. The Sound Tigers had Friday night off, but they did defeat the Hartford Wolf Pack by a score of 1-0 on Wednesday evening. Goaltender Nathan Lawson recorded the shutout against the Wolf Pack stopping all 23 shots he faced, while Kurtis McLean netted the game-winning marker.
WELCOME TO SPRINGFIELD: The Falcons announced Wednesday that forward Carl Corazzini has been reassigned to the AHL's Peoria Rivermen by their National Hockey League affiliate, the Edmonton Oilers. In return, the St. Louis Blues have reassigned forward Charles Linglet from Peoria to Springfield. Linglet made his Springfield debut on Friday night scoring his first goal as a member of the Falcons.
Linglet is in his fifth pro season and he played in 37 games for the Rivermen this year collecting one goal and eight assists for nine points and 23 penalty minutes. In 80 games with Peoria last year, the 6-foot-2, 212-pound native of Montreal, Quebec collected 24 goals and 42 assists for 66 points and 65 penalty minutes. During the 2006-07 campaign, Linglet recorded an AHL career high 31 goals in 73 games.
Corazzini collected seven goals and 12 assists for 19 points and 18 penalty minutes in 55 games played with Springfield this year. Corazzini spent the 2007-08 campaign with the AHL's Grand Rapids Griffins where he collected 24 goals, 36 assists, 60 points and 14 penalty minutes in 80 games played. He led the Griffins in goals, assists, points and games played. Prior to last season with Grand Rapids, Corazzini spent two years with the AHL's Norfolk Admirals collecting 54 goals and 58 assists for 112 points in 143 career games.
JACQUES BACK TO EDMONTON: The Edmonton Oilers recalled left wing J.F. Jacques from the Falcons on Wednesday. Jacques has been recalled from the Oilers' affiliate following a two-week conditioning assignment. The 6'4", 217-pound forward missed the season's first 51 games due to a back injury and was assigned to Springfield for conditioning on February 6. In eight games with the Falcons, Jacques scored a goal and five assists for six points. He was even with 13 penalty minutes and his goal was scored on the power play.
SOUND TIGERS GAME RECAP: Nathan Lawson saw a barrage of shots stopping all 23 he faced to earn his second shutout of the season and give the Sound Tigers a 1-0 win on Wednesday night in Hartford. Kurtis McLean scored the only goal of the game in the opening period. The Sound Tigers improved to 32-17-3-3 and they now have 70 points, five behind the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins for second place in the East Division.
McLean would break the scoreless tie 17:42 into the first period, with his 14th goal of the season. Ben Walter slid a pass to Joe Callahan at the center point position where the defenseman wristed a shot on Hartford goaltender, Matt Zaba. Zaba made the save, but McLean grabbed the loose puck and chipped it over Zaba's pad for the 1-0 lead.
Hartford had their best chance of the second period when Artem Anisimov streaked in alone on Lawson. The Wolf Pack's leading scorer dipped his shoulder and snapped a shot, attempting to go over Lawson's blocker, but the Sound Tigers' goalie was able to get his stick on the shot to keep Hartford off the scoreboard through two periods.
Lawson would complete his shutout in the third period, turning aside the final 10 shots he faced to earn his second blanking of the season and give the Sound Tigers a 1-0 victory over the Wolf Pack.
