Portland Winterhawks News Release
The Portland Winterhawks have acquired the rights to forward Ryley Bennefield from the Lethbridge Hurricanes in exchange for the rights to defenseman Branden Scheidl.
Bennefield, 16, was Lethbridge's second round pick in the 2009 WHL Bantam Draft and played three games for the Hurricanes last season. This season, Bennefield has been playing for the Wetaskiwin Icemen of the Capital Junior Hockey League (located in Alberta, Canada), where he has 12 goals and eight assists for 20 points in 16 games, ranking second in team scoring. He is a 6'0", 167-pound center.
"Ryley is a player we had highly rated going into the 2009 Bantam Draft. We weren't able to draft him at the time, but we're excited to be able to acquire him today," said Portland Winterhawks General Manager & Head Coach Mike Johnston. "He's a strong center with good speed and a hard shot. He has a nose for the net and we think he will develop into a valuable player for us."
Scheidl was a fourth round pick, 72nd overall, by the Winterhawks in the 2010 Bantam Draft. This season with the Saskatoon Contacts of the Saskatchewan Midget AAA Hockey League, he has one goal and three assists for four points in 25 games.
Full season, 18, 10 and 5-game ticket plans for the 2010-11 season are on sale now. Group rates start at just 10 people and every ticket includes a free Winterhawks hat. Contact the Winterhawks at 503-236-HAWK or seats@winterhawks.com to secure the best seats.
