Lethbridge Hurricanes News Release

Lethbridge, AB - Lethbridge Hurricanes GM and Head Coach Rich Preston announced this morning the Canes have traded prospect Ryley Bennefield to the Portland Winterhawks in exchange for 95-born defenseman Branden Schiedl. Schiedl is a 5'9" 160 pound defenseman and one of Portland's 4th round picks (72nd overall) in the 2010 WHL Bantam Draft. Schiedl is currently a teammate of Hurricanes 2nd round pick Craig Leverton and played good minutes as a member of the Saskatoon Contacts who recently played in the Championship game of the 2010 Macs Midget Tournament Championship game. Scheidl, like Leverton, was selected to play for Team Saskatchewan U16 in the 2011 Canada Winter Games to be held in Halifax from February 10-28th, 2011.

"I have seen Branden play five games this season and he is a player we have very good game reports on over the past two seasons - as we had him ranked well in our Bantam Draft rankings" said Canes Assistant GM Brad Robson "Branden is a skilled d-man and a very good skater with good hockey sense and vision. We think he has the ability to help the power play with his skill and he will be a very good addition for our current group of 95-born players"

With the addition of Scheidl, the Hurricanes enhance what is already a strong group of 95-born defensemen, led by the likes of 2010 2nd round WHL Bantam Draft picks Macoy Erkamps and Joel Topping. Erkamps was recently selected to play for Team BC at the 2011 Canada Winter Games.
