Chiefs News: Chiefs Stand Pat at Trade Deadline, Reassign Defenseman
Published on January 10, 2011 under Western Hockey League (WHL)
Spokane Chiefs News Release
The Spokane Chiefs did not make a trade prior to the WHL trade deadline, but will reassign defenseman Kyle Krzyzaniak to the Dauphin Kings of the Manitoba Junior Hockey League.
"We were interested in improving our team but in the process we felt the changes necessary to compete any trades would hurt our team strengths and team chemistry," Chiefs General Manager Tim Speltz said.
"We're not disrupting anything," Chiefs Head Coach Don Nachbaur said. "We're moving forward with what we have. We knew at the beginning of the season we were going to be young. We have had great leadership and one thing we have going for us is chemistry."
"We are very comfortable with our team as it stands," Speltz said.
Spokane is currently in second place in the U.S. Division with 53 points, four points behind the Portland Winterhawks with three games in hand. The Chiefs are the top scoring team in the WHL averaging 4.21 per game, second best in goals against at 2.64 allowed per game and boast the top penalty killing unit in the WHL at 86.4%.
After starting the season 2-5-0-0, the Chiefs have gone 22-5-3-2, including a pair of six game win streaks. In their last 23 games, Spokane is 17-2-3-2.
The Chiefs will embark on a four game in five night stretch this week, including Wednesday night's trip to Portland. Spokane will play a home-and-home on Friday and Saturday with the Kootenay Ice with the first game being played in Cranbrook. The Chiefs will host the Ice on Saturday in the Rockstar Outdoor Hockey Classic at Avista Stadium. The weekend will finish on Sunday in Everett.
Wednesday night, the Chiefs will welcome captain Jared Cowen back to the lineup. The 19-year-old missed 10 games while winning a silver medal with Team Canada at the World Junior Hockey Championships.
Spokane's roster includes 24 players; two goaltenders, seven defensemen and 15 forwards.
