RHP Ryan Buch (1-1, 4.08) @ RHP Barret Loux (4-3, 3.90)

Late-Night Losin': A terrific comeback fell short in extra innings last night, as the Pelicans outlasted the Dash 5-4 in 12 frames to win their first game of the series. Myrtle Beach scored twice in the first inning and added single runs in the second and sixth innings to jump out to a 4-0 lead. Winston-Salem rallied for two runs in the seventh and eighth innings to tie the game and send it beyond regulation. The Pelicans ended the nearly four-hour contest shortly before 11 p.m. when Mitch Hilligoss hit a double over Jose Martinez' head to score Leury Garcia from first base and win it in a walk-off. The loss snapped Winston's three-game win streak and bumped the Dash back to six games behind Myrtle for first place in the division.

Yount Up: Austin Yount continued to emerge from his season-long funk last night, reaching base all five times he batted against the Pelicans. Yount went 2 for 3 with a single, a triple, two walks, and he reached base on an error. Over his last four games, he is hitting .462 (6 for 13) to raise his season average 33 points from .176 to .209.

Working Overtime: With back-to-back extra-inning contests over the last two nights, the Dash have played more extra-inning games than any other team in minor league baseball this season. Winston has played in 12 such games this season, five more than Myrtle Beach which is second in the Carolina League. The Dash are 7-5 when the game goes beyond regulation and are tied with Advanced-A Jupiter for the most extra-inning victories in minor league baseball in 2011.

Like Déjà Vu All Over Again: If last night's result felt somewhat familiar, you are not mistaken. Exactly seven weeks before the Dash lost last night 5-4 in 12 innings at Myrtle Beach, they lost by the same score in the same number of innings to the Pelicans at BB&T Coastal Field. That game on April 20 was started by Andre Rienzo, the same Winston starter from last night's game. On April 20, Travis Adair's infield single scored Andres James from third base to win it for the Pelicans in a walk-off. Both 12-inning games were the longest games in terms of innings for the Dash this season while last night's game was the longest time wise, clocking in at three hours and 54 minutes.

Boom Goes the Bayou: Jared Mitchell extended his hitting streak to a season-best seven games last night with his RBI single in the seventh inning against Zach Osborne. The former Bayou Bengal is 7 for 28 during the streak for a batting average of .250 to go along with four doubles, one home run, three RBI, and five runs scored.

Dramatic Dash: Winston-Salem is starting to rack up the late wins. Tuesday night the Dash won in their team final at bat for the second straight game and for the tenth time this season. It was the fourth time in eight days the team has accomplished that feat. Last Tuesday, Jared Mitchell hit a two-run walk-off double to defeat the Nationals 4-3 and on the following night, Andy Wilkins scored from third on a wild pitch to give Winston-Salem a walk-off 2-1 win in ten innings over the P-Nats. On Monday night, Jason Bour's RBI fielder's choice in the ninth inning snapped a tie game to send Winston to a 3-2 victory and the Dash scored four times in the tenth inning on Tuesday to win 6-2.

Playing them close to the vest: The Dash have an inordinate number of close games this season, as 46 of the team's 59 games have been decided by three runs or fewer and the team has had a lead in 45 games this season. Winston has played 23 one-run games and 15 two-run games. The Dash are 11-12 in one-run games and 8-7 in two run contests. At this rate, the Dash would play 90 one - or two-run games this season.

Reed it and Weep: Addison Reed needed all he could muster to make it through his two-inning stint to finish Monday night's game. Reed threw 42 pitches, including 13 to Ryan Strausborger at the end of the game. Ironically, Reed was trying to retire Strausborger to finish the game; two years ago Reed was finishing games for Stephen Strasburg at San Diego State as the team's closer. Reed did not allow a run in his two innings last night, making it six straight appearances and 12 straight innings without allowing a run. His ERA sits at 1.71 in 26.1 innings with the Dash. Among relief pitchers in the CL, Reed is second in K/9 IP (11.96) and first in fewest BB/9 IP (1.37).

Today's Opposing Starter: RHP Barret Loux (4-3, 3.90) makes his 12th start of the season for the Pelicans and his second against the Dash. He beat Winston-Salem at BB&T Ballpark on May 19, allowing one run on four hits over six innings. In his last two starts, he had given up a combined six runs in 7.2 innings against Frederick and Lynchburg. Loux was originally drafted by the Arizona Diamondbacks in the first round (sixth overall) of the 2010 MLB First-Year Player Draft, but failed a physical and was declared a free agent on September 1. He signed with the Rangers on November 22, 2010. Loux attended Texas A&M University, where he went 11-2 with a 2.83 ERA during his junior season (2009). He was named Third Team All-American by Louisville Slugger and was a semifinalist for the USA Baseball Golden Spikes Award, eventually won by Nationals prospect Bryce Harper. Loux was a college teammate of current Dash outfielder Kyle Colligan, and is ranked by Baseball America as the 24th-best prospect in the Texas Rangers organization.
