Winston-Salem Dash News Release
MYRTLE BEACH, SC (JUNE 9, 2011) - Myrtle Beach scored four runs in both the second and third innings to cruise past the Dash 8-4 in the series finale on Thursday night at BB&T Coastal Field. With the win, the Pelicans earned a split of the four game series on the Grand Strand and kept Winston-Salem winless on Thursdays in 2011.
After a scoreless first inning, Dash starter Ryan Buch ran into trouble in the second. He loaded the bases and then hit Santiago Chirino to force home a run. Leury Garcia drove in two more with a two-run single and a wild pitch scored Chirino to make it 4-0 Pelicans (35-25).
Winston-Salem (28-32) scored a run on a Jared Mitchell sacrifice fly in the third inning to cut into the deficit, but Myrtle Beach kept hammering away at Buch (1-2) in the bottom of the frame.
The first two batters reached on a single and a walk, leading up to Jared Prince's RBI single to return the Pelicans' lead to four runs. Vinny DiFazio followed with a three-run home run over the seating section in left field to break open the game and send Myrtle to an 8-1 lead.
The Dash got another run across against Pelicans starter Barret Loux (5-3) when Kyle Colligan homered to the same spot as DiFazio in the fifth inning. Winston could not manage anything else against Loux, who lasted seven innings.
Carolina League All-Stars Jose Martinez and Ian Gac each drove in runs in the eighth against Kasey Kiker, sparking another late-inning rally. Trailing by four runs, the Dash put two on with two outs, but Trevor Hurley relieved the ineffective Kiker and struck out Jake Oester to end the threat.
Winston-Salem put two more men on base in the ninth inning, but Mitchell struck out against Hurley to end the game. Mitchell's seven-game hitting streak also ended with an 0 for 4 night at the plate.
Loux picked up the win with seven strong innings of work. Buch pitched well outside of the two four-run innings, but was saddled with his second consecutive loss.
With the loss, Winston fell to 0-7 on Thursday games in the 2011 season.
The Dash return to BB&T Ballpark for final home stand of the first half on Friday at 7:05 p.m. against the Wilmington Blue Rocks. The game will be televised on WXII's THIS Carolina channel that evening with Winston-Salem State University head baseball coach Kevin Ritsche providing color commentary.
