Hood Named a Carolina League All Star
June 9, 2011 - Carolina League (CarL1)
Potomac Nationals News Release
(WOODBRIDGE, VA) Destin Hood has been named a 2011 Carolina League All Star, the League announced on Thursday afternoon. Hood is second in the Carolina League with 19 doubles, has hit four home runs and driven in 31 through 57 games. The Mobile, Alabama native and second round pick in 2008 is hitting .273 with eight stolen bases and leads the Nationals with 31 walks, third most in the League.
Hood will be joined in Modesto by Potomac manager Matt LeCroy - who will skipper the All Star team - and trainer Alan Wood.
The three starters in the outfield for the Carolina League are Jose Martinez (Winston-Salem), Whit Merrifield (Wilmington) and Ryan Strausborger (Myrtle Beach).
A pair of Lynchburg Hillcats have been named starters on the infield: shortstop Andrelton Simmons and third baseman Joey Terdoslavich. Simmons is second in the league with a .315 batting average, while Terdoslavich has hit 11 homers, second most in the circuit. Reynaldo Rodriguez is also a starter; the Salem first baseman is third in the league with a .314 average. Wilmington second baseman Rey Navarro gets the starting nod, thanks in large part to his 63 hits (fifth most in the league), including a league best seven triples.
Ian Gac, who leads the league in home runs (15) and is third with 40 RBI, will start as the designated hitter. Salem's Dan Butler tops the RBI leaders with 46, and will be the starting catcher.
A strong pitching staff is headlined by Kinston's Drew Pomeranz and Wilmington's Jake Odorizzi, two of the top pitching prospects in the Minor Leagues and owners of the top two ERAs in the CL. They are joined by Robert Bundy (Frederick), Preston Guilmet (Kinston), Chris Hernandez (Salem), Michael Mariot (Wilmington), Andre Rienzo (Winston-Salem), and Myrtle Beach's Robert Ross and Joe Wieland.
The game will be played June 21 in Modesto, California.
