Pelicans Game Notes
June 9, 2011 - Carolina League (CarL1)
Myrtle Beach Pelicans News Release
RHP Barret Loux (4-3, 3.90) at RHP Ryan Buch (1-1, 4.08)
ACE OF BASE: When Ryan Strausborger chopped an RBI single in the sixth inning last night, he extended his on-base streak to 20 consecutive games. The Osceola, IN native's run began on May 19 in Winston-Salem and has now passed Jared Prince's 19-gamer for the longest streak for the Pelicans this season. He is batting .312 with a .357 on base percentage during the streak that is the third-longest run in the Carolina League this year. Tyler Holt of Kinston had a 25-gamer in May and Salem's Reynaldo Rodriguez had a streak of 21. Ryan has hit safely in eight straight.
SCOREBOARD WATCHING: With Kinston rolling to a 9-1 win in Wilmington, the Pelicans needed a win to stay three and a half games up in the Southern Division. They did just that in dramatic fashion, dropping their magic number to clinch the first-half title and a postseason berth to nine. The Birds have 11 games left on their first-half schedule while the Indians have 12. The two clubs will square off in Kinston tomorrow to start a three-game series.
GOIN' BACK TO CALI: The Carolina League announced the selections for the California-Carolina League All-Star Game that will be played June 21 in Modesto, CA. The Pelicans had five players named to the team, more than any other squad in the league. Pitchers Joe Wieland (5-3, 2.13) and Robbie Ross (7-1, 2.59) were among the nine pitchers chosen. Outfielder Ryan Strausborger (.299, 6 HR, 33 RBI) was named as a starter and catcher Zach Zaneski (.308, 6 HR, 27 RBI) was named as a reserve. Third baseman Mike Olt (.286, 10 HR, 34 RBI) received enough votes to start for the Carolina League team, but will not play due to a broken collarbone.
