Lynchburg Hillcats News Release

Lynchburg, VA- Chris Masters had a dominant outing, but the Salem pitching held the Lynchburg bats at bay. The Red Sox scored just enough late in the game to take a 3-1 win over the Hillcats Thursday night.

Each team scored in the first inning. In the top half, Salem's Kolbrin Vitek singled home Shannon Wilkerson to take the early lead. In the bottom half of the inning, Todd Cunningham walked, and Andrelton Simmons followed with a double to score him from first to tie the game at one. Both Cunningham and Simmons were named to the Carolina League All-Star team earlier in the day.

Lynchburg starter Chris Masters had one of his best outings of the year. He gave up the run in the first, but after a double by Reynaldo Rodriguez in that inning, he retired 11 in a row, and 20 of the next 21 he faced. He struck out nine batters to tie his season-high without walking any.

Masters left the game after seven innings, and Matthew Frevert came in. The first batter he faced, David Mailman, hit a home run to give the Red Sox a 2-1 lead. Frevert (1-2) retired the next three to get out of the inning.

Salem scored once more in the ninth to take the game 3-1. Tom Ebert picked up the win in relief to move to 2-3, and Jeremiah Bayer worked the eighth and ninth innings to earn his second save of the year.

Lynchburg fell to 26-33 and Salem improved to 28-31.

The Hillcats now travel to Frederick for three games against the Keys. In the first game, left-hander Matt Crim (1-4) will face fellow lefty Nick Haughian (2-3). First pitch is scheduled for 7:00 pm.

The Hillcats On-Deck Show presented by Honda/Suzuki of Lynchburg will go on the air at 6:40 pm. Tune in to 105.5 KD Country or go to lynchburg-hillcats.com to listen live to all the action.
