EASE GUIDES WINSTON ON SUNDAY
Behind a strong start from right-hander Dylan Cease and three scoreless innings from the bullpen, Winston-Salem defeated Carolina on Sunday at BB&T Ballpark. The Dash rebranded as the Winston-Salem Rayados for the second time on Sunday as part of MiLB's "Fun Cup" initiative. Cease worked six innings in the contest and allowed just one run on one hit, good for his sixth quality start of the season. The right-hander now leads the Carolina League with seven wins. Down 1-0 in the third, Zach Remillard tied the game with a solo shot to left against Braden Webb. Winston-Salem added on to its advantage in the frame with an RBI double from Joel Booker, an RBI single from Mitch Roman and a sacrifice fly from Luis Basabe. Danny Dopico and Mike Morrison each threw a scoreless inning of middle relief, while Matt Foster closed out the game with a scoreless ninth.
DASH HAVE SOME QUALITY ARMS
Winston-Salem has righted the ship with four straight wins and victories in eight of its last 12 contests. One of the biggest drivers behind the Dash's latest string of success has been the starting rotation, which has logged 10 quality starts in its last 12 outings. During that stretch, Winston-Salem's starting staff has gone 7-2 with a 1.84 ERA (15ER in 73.1IP). Overall, the Dash are second in the Carolina League in ERA (3.48) and strikeouts (500).
SWEEP CITY
The Dash's three-game sweep of Carolina, which saw the team outscore the Mudcats 18-5, was Winston-Salem's first sweep at home since May 1-3, when the Dash swept the Lynchburg Hillcats. Last year, the Dash had one home sweep.
PLAYOFF PICTURE
The Dash are currently a half-game out of first place, trailing only the Buies Creek Astros, who Winston-Salem is 5-5 against this year. The Dash last clinched a first-half championship in 2012.
HOME-HEAVY END TO THE FIRST HALF
After a road-heavy schedule to start the season, which has seen the Dash play 32 of their first 54 games on the road, Winston-Salem closes out the first half with 13 of its final 16 games at BB&T Ballpark. The rest of the slate includes the team's current three-game set against Salem (6/5-6/7), a three-game series against Myrtle Beach (6/11-6/13) and a four-game set against Wilmington (6/14-6/17).
WELCOME BACK, RED SOX
The Salem Red Sox visit BB&T Ballpark for the second time this season, having split a four-game set against Winston-Salem from April 19-22. The Dash traveled to Haley Toyota Field from May 7-9, winning all three games against Salem in that road set.
VENEZUELAN POWER
Right-hander Luis Martinez will get the start in the series opener against Salem on Tuesday. Martinez has logged back-to-back quality starts for Winston-Salem, going 1-1 with a 1.38 ERA in that span. The Carupano, Venezuela, native earned a victory over Potomac by tossing six shutout innings at Pfitzner Stadium on May 25. In his last start, which took place on May 30 at Myrtle Beach, the 23-year-old tossed seven strong innings, allowing two earned runs in a loss. Martinez will be facing the Salem Red Sox for the second time in his career.
DASH DOTS
Outfielder Luis Robert, who is rated the third-best prospect in the White Sox system by MLB Pipeline, was transferred from Winston-Salem's disabled list to Low-A Kannapolis' roster on Tuesday...As part of today's roster moves, catcher Daniel Gonzalez has been placed on the Dash's active roster, while right-hander Yelmison Peralta was placed on the seven-day disabled list...The White Sox selected infielder Nick Madrigal from Oregon State University with the fourth overall selection in the 2018 Draft...Madrigal is hitting .406 with the Beavers this year.
