Winston-Salem Dash News Release
WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - Tied at five in the bottom of the ninth inning with two outs, Alex Call delivered a walk-off single to bring home Ti'Quan Forbes to give the Dash a 6-5 win over the Salem Red Sox at BB&T Ballpark on Tuesday night.
Call came to the plate with Forbes at first base and two outs. With a 1-2 count, Red Sox (26-28) right-hander Daniel Gonzalez (6-1), bounced a pickoff throw that got past Jerry Downs and allowed Forbes to advance to second base. On the very next pitch, Call hit a line drive that ricocheted off Gonzalez on the mound toward Brett Netzer at second base, allowing Forbes to race around third and score the winning run with a headfirst slide.
Matt Foster (2-1) set the stage for the dramatic finish, striking out the side in order in the top of the ninth.
The win is the fourth walk-off victory for Winston-Salem (33-25) this season, and the second against the Red Sox. Winston-Salem has now won five games in a row, and the team has claimed sole possession of first place in the Southern Division of the Carolina League.
Winston-Salem trailed early on in the game. After not allowing a hit through the first two innings, Luis Martinez ran into trouble in the third. He walked Jordan Wren to lead off the frame, then surrendered back-to-back singles to load the bases. Following a sacrifice fly from Brett Netzer, the Red Sox plated two more on a potential double-play grounder that included a throwing error from Forbes.
But in the fourth, the Dash roared back to tie the game and take the lead. Yermin Mercedes led off with a walk and moved to second on a bloop single from Blake Rutherford. Then, with two outs, Yeyson Yrizarri ripped a double into the left-field corner, bringing around both Mercedes and Rutherford to make it a 3-2 game. Next, on a 2-2 pitch from Hernandez, Joel Booker crushed a two-run homer to left - his fifth long ball of the season - to give the Dash a 4-3 lead.
However, Salem promptly retook the lead in the fifth. With Brett Netzer on second base and two outs, Bobby Dalbec blasted his league-leading 12th home run behind the left-field fence to make it 5-4 Red Sox.
Zach Remillard responded with a moonshot of his own in the sixth, when he crushed a 2-2 pitch from Gonzalez down the left-field line for a solo home run, tying the game at five. He finished the night 3-for-4 with a home run and an RBI.
Zach Thompson came on in relief of Martinez in the sixth, and he fired three scoreless innings to lower his season ERA to 2.08 and keep the game tied before handing the ball to Foster. Thompson has now reeled off four straight scoreless appearances, striking out 10 across nine innings.
Winston-Salem continues its series with the Salem Red Sox at BB&T Ballpark on Wednesday at 7 p.m. Right-hander Jimmy Lambert (3-5, 3.65 ERA) goes for the Dash against right-hander Tanner Houck (2-6, 6.04 ERA). Pregame coverage begins at 6:45 p.m., and fans can listen live on wsdash.com/broadcast, MiLB.tv and the TuneIn Radio App.
Promotions during the Dash's homestand include Pups in the Park on Wednesday, and a Lowes Foods Thirsty Thursday featuring select beers for $1 through the seventh inning. For tickets and more information, call the Dash at (336) 714-2287 or visit wsdash.com.
