Salem Red Sox News Release

WINSTON-SALEM, NC - The Salem Red Sox held, then blew a pair of leads Tuesday evening, and ultimately fell to begin a critical road swing, falling 6-5 in a walkoff loss to the Winston-Salem Dash at BB&T Ballpark.

Salem (26-28) lost their third straight game and missed out on a chance to get back to .500. Winston-Salem (32-25) notched their fifth straight win and moved into first place in the Southern Division of the Carolina League. The Red Sox fell back to 2.5 games behind the Potomac Nationals with 14 games left to play in the first half.

The Sox struck first in the top of the third inning against Winston-Salem starter Luis Martinez (ND), who gave up a leadoff walk to Jordan Wren before singles by Chris Madera and Santiago Espinal loaded the bases. Brett Netzer hit a sacrifice fly to deep center, plating Wren and moving Madera to third base. C.J. Chatham earned a walk to load the bases back up. Bobby Dalbec hit a grounder to third that Zach Remillard whipped to second for one out, but the throw on to first by Ti'Quan Forbes was wild. Madera and Espinal both scored, giving the Sox a 3-0 lead.

Winston-Salem answered in the bottom of the fourth against Salem starter Darwinzon Hernandez (ND), who surrendered a leadoff walk of his own to Yermin Mercedes before Blake Rutherford blooped a single into shallow center. Hernandez fanned Remillard, and Nate Nolan lined out to left, giving the Sox hope they might escape unscathed. But Yeyson Yrizarri slashed a double up the left field line to plate the runners, and Joel Booker blasted a two-run homer to left, giving the Dash a 4-3 edge.

Salem moved back in front in the top of the fifth inning. With one away, Netzer lashed a double to right field. Chatham struck out, but Dalbec smashed a towering two-run homer to left field, traveling an estimated 450 feet. It was his league-best 12th of the season, and it put the Sox back ahead 5-4.

The Dash drew level in the bottom of the sixth against new reliever Daniel Gonzalez (BS, 1; L, 6-1). With one out, Remillard blistered a fastball over the left field wall for a solo bomb, tying the ballgame at 5-5.

New reliever Matt Foster (W, 2-1) shut down the Sox in the top of the ninth inning, striking out the side. In the bottom of the ninth, the Dash got Forbes on base with one out when he lined a single into right. Gonzalez recovered to fan Luis Alexander Basabe, but a pickoff attempt at first base was errant, allowing Forbes to scoot to second base. Alex Call hit a hard grounder up the middle that caromed off Gonzalez's cleat and soared high into the air. Forbes sped home, just beating Netzer's throw to the plate to score the winning run.

Hernandez gave up four runs on five hits and four walks in five innings, whiffing a season-best seven batters. Gonzalez surrendered two runs (one earned) on six hits while fanning three in 3.2 innings, suffering his first loss of the season.

The Sox will look to bounce back Wednesday night, with righty Tanner Houck toeing the slab for the Sox against Dash right-hander Jimmy Lambert. First pitch from BB&T Ballpark is at 7:00 p.m., and the pregame show with Ben Gellman and Suzie Cool begins at 6:45 p.m. on the Red Sox broadcast network.
