Wheeling Nailers News Release

KALAMAZOO, MI- The Wheeling Nailers peppered the goal on Friday night, putting 38 shots on goal. However, Riley Gill and the Kalamazoo got the upper hand. Gill stopped 37 of those shots, and his teammates gave him five goals of offensive support, as the Wings took a 2-1 lead in the best-of-five series, defeating Wheeling 5-1.

For the third straight game in the series, the Wings opened the scoring. With 5:25 remaining in the first period, Dwight Helminen took the puck out from behind the back of the net, and sent a shot toward the net. Patrick Killeen made the stop, but the rebound kicked out to the left side of the crease, where it was quickly deposited back in by Elgin Reid. Sam Ftorek also picked up an assist on the former Nailer's first goal of the postseason.

Kalamazoo quickly added to their lead in the second period, as Dustin Cloutier deflected Mike Matczak's point shot into the back of the cage at the 1:12 mark. The Nailers answered that goal just 2:28 later, cutting their deficit to one. Cody Chupp played the puck through center ice to Paul Crowder, who entered the offensive zone with Chris Barton. Crowder slipped a pass through the slot to Barton, who put his team on the scoreboard. However, the Wings came back with one more goal in the middle frame, and it came on the man advantage. Kory Karlander centered the puck to Nick Sirota, who crashed the net, and deflected his shot through Killeen. The power play goal was Kalamazoo's fourth of the series.

The Wings wrapped up their game three win with two more goals in the third period. At the 4:32 mark, Darryl Bootland entered the offensive zone on the right side, and beat Killeen up and over the right shoulder. 1:54 after that, Kalamazoo added their second goal of the frame, as Elgin Reid set up Dustin Cloutier, who scored on a backhander from the left side, giving the game a 5-1 final score.

Riley Gill got the wing for Kalamazoo, stopping 37 of the 38 shots he faced. Patrick Killeen took the loss for Wheeling, making 20 saves on 25 shots.

The Nailers and Wings will play game four on Saturday night at Wings Stadium, with face-off scheduled for 7:30.
