Kalamazoo Wings News Release
KALAMAZOO, MI- The Kalamazoo Wings had a flair for the dramatics on Wednesday night, as they forced overtime against the Tulsa Oilers in the last minute of the game and eventually skated to a 3-2 victory at Wings Event Center.
In the first-ever meeting between the two teams, Kalamazoo and Tulsa spent most of the first period feeling each other out. Though both teams had power play tries in the opening frame, neither could capitalize on the presented opportunities. Kalamazoo's Joel Martin made 12 first-period stops and his counterpart Jamie Phillips stopped all nine tries from the Wings in the opening 20 minutes.
As the second period progressed and the teams continued to generate back and forth chances, it was the Oilers that tallied the game's first goal. As they carried ahead on an odd-man rush, Tulsa's Emerson Clark dished the puck along to Miles Koules, who finished the play with a deke past Martin, sending the Oilers into the dressing room after 40 minutes ahead by a goal.
Roaring out of the gates in the third period, Kalamazoo found a new gear and tied the game less than five minutes into the period. Tyler Biggs cleanly swept a faceoff back to Scott Henegar, who walked towards the middle and fired a wrist shot that picked the top corner of the goal.
As the play intensified, it was the Oilers that capitalized after generating a two-on-one rush towards Martin's goal. Darcy Murphy walked in with the puck along the right wing and placed a shot just inside the far-side post.
With the Wings trailing by a goal and time winding down, Martin hustled to the bench for an extra attacker. Kyle Bushee slid the puck to Tyler Shattock at the left-side faceoff dot, and Shattock tucked a top-corner wrist shot over the shoulder of Phillips, tying the game with 34 seconds remaining.
Shattock's equalizer sent the game into overtime.
Less than a minute into overtime, Tanner Sorenson lifted the stick of a Tulsa defender, swiped the puck, and carried in alone on Phillips. Sorenson pushed the puck over the glove of Phillips and earned the overtime winner, his second in as many games.
