Rochester Red Wings News Release
Tommy Milone pitched seven shutout innings, and Adam Brett Walker's two-out single in the bottom of the ninth inning gave the Red Wings a 1-0 win over the Columbus Clippers Tuesday night at Frontier Field. The first place Wings maintain their lead over Scranton/Wilkes-Barre with the win.
The series with the Clippers continues Wednesday night at 7:05 p.m., another $1 Wednesday with $1 Zweigle's hot dogs, peanuts, chips, and Cracker Jack. Complete promotions details below....
Tuesday's series opener between two first place clubs also featured a pair of undefeated pitchers: Red Wings veteran Milone (4-0 in six starts) and Clippers rookie Mike Clevinger (6-0 in nine starts). Milone worked around a lead-off double and a one-out walk to escape trouble in the top of the first Tuesday.
In the first, Danny Santana singled in his first at-bat of a rehab assignment from Minnesota. James Beresford followed with a line drive up the middle that glanced off the foot of Clevinger, an infield hit that gave the Wings two on and none out. Clevinger caught Jorge Polanco looking at a third strike, but Kennys Vargas drew a walk to load the bases with one out. Clevinger struck out Eddie Rosario, and retired Logan Schafer on a grounder to leave the bases full.
In the top of the third, Rosario notched the first out of the inning with a beautiful catch near the wall in center field, robbing Collin Cowgil of an extra base hit. Milone forced the next two batters to ground out, keeping it a scoreless game going into the bottom of the inning.
In the bottom of the fifth, Clevinger walked Walker to put a runner on base for Rochester for the first time since the start of the game. Walker effortlessly stole second base, giving the team an early opportunity to score. John Ryan Murphy hit a grounder during the next at-bat with Walker out at third in a fielder's choice play. With one out, Santana grounded into a double play.
To start off the top of the sixth, a wild throw to first base by Wilfredo Tovar put Cowgill on second base. With one out, Ronny Rodriguez lined a hit towards second base; luckily Polanco was there to make an incredible play in which he managed to stop the ball and secure an out. With a runner now on third base, the Red Wings were able to prevent Columbus from scoring yet again thanks to a flyout. After six innings, Milone had only given up one hit with five strikeouts.
In the top of the seventh, Adam Moore hit a ground rule double to kick off the inning for Columbus. Moore has now obtained a hit in nine straight games. To follow up the double, Yandy Diaz hit a single to right field, which almost allowed Moore to score if it had not been for Santana's strong throw to the plate. With runners on the corners and one out, Milone struck out the next two batters, getting out of a jam once again.
Marcus Walden relieved Milone to open the eighth inning. Milone pitched seven scoreless innings and allowed just three hits and a walk. Milone struck out eight, and threw 108 pitches - 74 for strikes. Walden struck out the side in the eighth, needing just 13 pitches.
Clevinger also turned in a stellar, scoreless, seven-inning worksheet, also allowing just three hits while walking three and striking out five. In his longest outing of the season with the Clippers, Clevinger threw 100 pitches, 64 for strikes. Ben Heller took over for Clevinger in the bottom of the eighth inning, and Heller got a quick out before Buck Britton lined a pinch-hit double. Heller struck out Beresford, walked Polanco, then got Vargas to fly out to end the scoring opportunity and send the game to the ninth in a scoreless tie.
J.T. Chargois pitched the ninth inning, working around a two-out single to add another scoreless frame. The Wings put the winning run at first against Austin Adams in the bottom of the ninth, when Adams (2-3) walked Rosario. Schafer fouled off two bunt attempts, then popped out for the first out. A groundout moved Rosario to second base with two outs, and that's when Walker drilled a 2-2 pitch to right field. Rosario hustled around from second base and made a slide to evade a tag, getting his hand on the plate to score the winning run. Chargois (1-0) picked up the relief win.
The Red Wings out-hit the Clippers 5-4. Murphy (0-for-2 with a walk) had his eight-game hit streak snapped, and Schafer (0-for-4) had his 10-game streak snapped.
NOTES: INF/OF Danny Santana joined the Wings Tuesday on a major league rehab assignment. He went 1-for-3 and made a strong throw to the plate to prevent a run from scoring in the seventh.
