Pawtucket Red Sox News Release
(Indianapolis, IN) - The Indianapolis Indians used seven extra-base hits against Pawtucket Red Sox starter William Cuevas to coast to a 6-2 victory in the opener of a three-game series on Tuesday night at Victory Field.
The PawSox were held to five hits in the loss, while the Indians hammered three solo home runs in the first five innings to grab a lead that they would never relinquish.
The setback was Pawtucket's first defeat by more than two runs since the last time the team faced Indianapolis on May 29.
Cuevas allowed six runs on nine hits, including four doubles and three homers, in six innings of work. He allowed more than three runs for the first time in 10 starts.
Josh Bell hammered the first pitch of the bottom of the second inning over the wall in the right field corner for his eighth home run of the season.
Danny Ortiz also pulled a solo blast (8) over the right field fence with one out in the fourth.
Gift Ngoepe completed the hat trick with a long ball (3) over the left field wall in the fifth.
Ngoepe's home run extended the Indians' lead to 3-1 after the PawSox had cut it to 2-1 in the top half of the frame.
In the top of the fifth, Henry Ramos singled, advanced to third on Deven Marrero's single and scored on Jose Vinicio's groundout to second base.
But Indianapolis used an otherwise spotless six innings from starter Frank Duncan and a three-run seventh to pull away with the win.
Jason Rogers, Pedro Florimon and Ngoepe all doubled to key the three-run frame.
Roman Mendez tossed two scoreless innings of relief, but Pawtucket's bats could only muster one more run.
Jantzen Witte led off the ninth with a walk, advanced to third on Ramos' double and scored on a Deven Marrero groundout. But Indianapolis reliever Justin Masterson set down the final three batters of the game.
The PawSox went 0-for-11 with runners in scoring position in the contest.
Pawtucket continues its three-game series against the Indians tomorrow at 1:35 p.m. Righthander Sean O'Sullivan (4-2, 2.77) is scheduled to make the start for the PawSox. Radio coverage on WHJJ (920 AM) and throughout the Pawtucket Red Sox radio network begins at 1:05 p.m.
The PawSox return to McCoy on Monday to begin an eight-game homestand. Good seats for each game are still available at the McCoy Stadium box office, by calling (401) 724-7300 or by visiting pawsox.com.
