Toledo Mud Hens News Release
The Hens were never quite able to make it over the hump on 'Holy Toledo Tuesday' at Fifth Third Field. The two offenses combined for 22 hits, in a three hour battle in which the SWB RailRiders prevailed.
The talented SWB offense got off to a hot start on Tuesday night off Weber, scoring two in the top of the first. The two runs crossed by way of a long home run off the bat of Gary Sanchez. The round tripper was scorched off of the scoreboard in left field to put SWB ahead. The right hander shook off his first inning woes with a scoreless second inning; however the RailRiders put up runs in both the third and fourth innings.
After Weber recorded two outs with one runner on in the fourth, the veteran induced what looked to be an inning ending ground out to shortstop. However, sure handed infielder Dixon Machado was unable to make the play and a deep triple followed from Ben Gamel scoring both RailRiders, and extending the SWB lead to 5-0.
For the 1st place RailRiders, starter Brady Lail kept the Hens' offense in check for his first four innings on 'Holy Toledo Tuesday' at Fifth Third Field.
The Toledo bats did wake up in the bottom of the sixth off Lail, as Casey McGehee and Chad Huffman led off the frame with back to back singles. Lail proceeded to walk Tyler Collins to load the bases with no one out. The Hens put their first run on the board on the next pitch as catcher John Hicks grounded into an RBI fielders' choice. With one in and just one away, Tyler Bortnick continued his recent tear at the plate and plated two more runs on a sharp triple down the line in left.
All in all the Hens sent nine hitters to the plate in the 5th, scoring four runs on five hits.
Weber's night ended with two outs in the sixth, as Angel Nesbitt was summoned out of the Hen pen to face Aaron Judge with two on. Weber left with a final line of 5.2 IP, 9 H, 6 R, 4 ER, 4 BB, 2 SO. The right hander threw 112 pitches in the loss.
The Hens were able to plate an additional run in the bottom of the sixth, as John Hicks doubled on a breaking ball to left field, scoring Casey McGehee. McGehee led the offense on Tuesday, with a 3-4 game, also scoring twice. Angel Nesbitt struggled in his two innings of work, allowing one run on two hits with three free passes.
Top Gun: Toledo backstop John Hicks had a 1-4 night at the plate with 2 RBI, however it was what he did behind the plate that was even more impressive on Tuesday. Hicks was able to throw out two would be base stealers early in the game, making his presence known to the SWB runners. Hicks recorded one of his two throws on Ben Gamel who leads the RailRiders with 12 stolen bags on the season.
The two teams are back on Wednesday night for game three of the four game set. First pitch is slated for 7:05 PM.
