ABOUT LAST NIGHT: The RailRiders amassed a mighty offensive that overwhelmed the host Mud Hens on Monday night, 8-4 The RailRiders collected 15 hits, worked seven walks and placed two men on with bruises en route to their sixth win in seven games. SWB's season-high-tying fourth straight road win has assured it of a winning road trip. The Mud Hens have lost eight of 11.
ALL ABOUT THE BENJAMIN: Ben Gamel fell a triple shy of the cycle. He went 3-for-5 with an RBI double, a triple, a walk and two runs scored. Gamel's 14 triples in 2015 tied him for second in the minors. He has tripled in each of the last two games, giving him three in 2016. A .250 hitter after an 0-for-4 showing versus Louisville on May 24, he has since gone 27-for-73 over his last 18 games, slashing .370/.459/.534/.993. He has his average up to .292, the highest it has been since he closed play at Rochester on May 1 at .305.
SEVVY: Through three Triple-A starts, Luis Severino has struck out 19 in 16.2 innings. Last night he became the first SWB starter to last seven innings since Chad Green on May 27 at Norfolk. Five SWB hurlers have combined to go seven innings or more eight total times this year. Severino (2-0) whiffed eight over his seven frames last night, but also allowed his first-ever Triple-A home run.
BELIEVE: Nick Swisher went 3-for-5 with two RBIs and a walk. After sitting the road trip opener, the Columbus native has gone 8-for-14 with three homers, eight RBIs, six runs scored and two walks over three games in his home state. His seven homers tie him for second on the team and he ranks third with 23 RBIs.
HIGASHIOKA WINS: Kyle Higashioka was named IL Batter of the Week yesterday and went 1-for-3 with two walks (one intentional) and a run scored. Today, the Yankees sent him down to Double-A Trenton. After going 0-for-4 in his first 2016 Triple-A game, he departs with hits in 12 straight, going 21-for-47 with slashes of .447/.490/.894/1.384. In that time he had five homers, six doubles, 17 RBIs and 13 runs scored. He caught four SWB shutouts over his 12 games behind the plate. He leaves the IL with its longest active hitting streak.
HAIL CESAR: Cesar Puello had a 2-for-4 showing and was hit by a pitch for the team-high ninth time, tying him for the seventh-most bruises in MiLB. The RailRiders-era record came in 2014 when Antoan Richardson was bruised 14 times (2nd in IL). As a Yankees affiliate, the zenith came in 2012 with an IL-high 15 plunkings of Francisco Cervelli. The overall SWB mark in when Chase Utley wore a black-and-blue mark 20 times for the 2002 Red Barons.
MULLING IT OVER: Conor Mullee allowed his first Triple-A run since May 3. He had 10 straight scoreless appearances over 18.1 innings before giving up an unearned tally on Monday. He still lowered his ERA to 0.59.
OFF THE RAILS: All nine men in SWB's posted at least one hit...The RailRiders went 3-for-16 with men in scoring position and stranded a season-high-tying 12 men on base...At 20-12 on the road, the RailRiders stand on pace to post 45 victories away from PNC Field...Last year's team led the IL with 42 road victories...The 2002 Red Barons set the franchise record with 45...The Yankees-era record came in 2012 when the IL North champs won 43 "road" games...That team played without a home stadium during PNC Field's reconstruction and posted all of its 84 wins outside of Moosic...The RailRiders have scored 41 runs in winning the first four games of this road trip...Opposing starters have allowed 25 runs (24 earned) over their 18 innings on the journey (12.00 ERA) as the RailRiders have hit a collective .355 (55-for-155) with nine doubles, two triples and eight home runs...Only Charlotte (304) has scored more runs in the IL than SWB (289)...Johnny Barbato stranded his two inherited runners and retired the IL's leader in slugging and extra-base hits, Steven Moya, with the tying run on deck to log his first save of 2016...The RailRiders have homered in a season-high-tying four straight games.
