Lehigh Valley IronPigs News Release
Brock Stassi's three-run walk-off double as part of a five-run ninth lifted the Lehigh Valley IronPigs (35-29) to a dramatic 7-6 win over the Gwinnett Braves (30-35) on Tuesday night at Coca-Cola Park.
Trailing 6-2, a pair of walks and a hit by pitch loaded the bases for the Pigs with one out in the ninth before Darin Ruf cut the lead to 6-4 with a two-run double which set the stage for Stassi's heroics later in the frame.
Three of the runs were charged to Braves RHP Bradley Roney (0.1 IP, 3 R, 3 ER, 2 BB) while RHP Jose Ramirez (0.0 IP, 2 H, 2 R, 2 ER, BB) who came in relief of Roney with the bases loaded and one away was tagged with the loss and drops to 1-2 on the year.
RHP Frank Herrmann (1.0 IP) tossed a scoreless top of the ninth to earn the win for the IronPigs and improve to 2-1 on the season.
The Pigs grabbed an early 1-0 lead with a run in the second as Andrew Knapp drew a leadoff walk, advanced to second on a groundout and scored on Cam Perkins' (3-4, 2B, RBI, SB) RBI single.
In the bottom of the fifth, Taylor Featherston (2-4, 2B, 2 R) reached with a ground-rule double to left with one out and came around to score on J.P. Crawford's RBI single to extend the Pigs lead to 2-0.
Gwinnett starter Joel De La Cruz (n/d) allowed two runs on four hits while walking three and fanning five in 5.0 IP.
In a four-run sixth that gave the Braves the lead for the time being, Anthony Recker's two-run shot off of Pigs starter David Buchanan tied things at two apiece for Gwinnett before Reid Brignac followed with a solo shot of his own to give the Braves a 3-2 lead. An RBI single from Blake Lalli later in the inning opened up a 4-2 advantage for the G-Braves.
Buchanan (n/d) gave up the four runs on six hits to go along with three walks and two strikeouts in 5.1 IP.
A pair of runs in the eighth gave the Braves a 6-2 lead as Recker hit a solo shot off of LHP Mario Hollands (1.2 IP, 3 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 2 K) and Daniel Castro plated a run via a sac fly later in the frame.
RHP Michael Mariot (1.0 IP, H) had a scoreless outing in relief for manger Dave Brundage's squad.
The series continues on Wednesday at 7:05 p.m. as LHP Anthony Vasquez (7-3, 3.28 in AA) gets the ball for Lehigh Valley against Gwinnett RHP Lucas Sims (2-5, 6.80).
