Syracuse Mets News Release
Louisville, KY - The Syracuse Chiefs fell to the Louisville Bats, 3-2, Tuesday night at Louisville Slugger Field after a 93-minute rain delay before the start of the game. Jason Martinson doubled and tripled, his second straight game with a triple.
Louisville (34-31) got on the board in the first inning for a second night in a row. Scott Schebler hit his sixth home run of the season over the right-field fence off Paolo Espino for a 1-0 lead.
The Bats added an unearned run in the second. Chris Berset singled to start the inning. Then Juan Perez reached on an error on second baseman Steve Lombardozzi to put runners on the corners. After a strikeout, Hernan Iribarren brought the run in on a groundout to second for a 2-0 Louisville lead.
Syracuse (30-33) added its first run in the fourth. Lombardozzi doubled to left field to lead off the inning. Brian Goodwin followed with a ground ball to the right side and reached on an infield hit. Carlos Triunfel fielded the ball at second but his flip with the glove sailed high of first, allowing Lombardozzi to score on the error to cut the lead to 2-1.
Brandon Allen needed one pitch to give the Bats a two-run lead back. Allen came into the game defensively in the top of the sixth for Major-League rehabber Jordan Pacheco. In Allen's first at-bat in the bottom of the inning, he knocked the first pitch from Espino out of the yard to right for a 3-1 Bats advantage.
The Chiefs again trimmed the lead to one in the eighth. Martinson tripled against Matt Magill to start the frame. He scored on pinch hitter Tony Campana's groundout to short to bring the score to 3-2. Syracuse loaded the bases from there but Jumbo Diaz got Matt den Dekker to bounce out to short to preserve the one-run lead. In the ninth, Martinson walked with two outs against Diaz, but pinch hitter Jose Lozada grounded out to end the game.
The Chiefs and Bats wrap up their season series Wednesday morning at 11:45 a.m. A.J. Cole is scheduled to start for Syracuse opposite Jon Moscot for Louisville.
