Grand Rapids Griffins News Release

Grand Rapids, Mich. - The Grand Rapids Griffins of the American Hockey League on Wednesday announced that center Jason Williams has been assigned by the Detroit Red Wings. In addition, the Griffins announced that they have signed defenseman Matt Eldred to a professional tryout.

Williams, 22, won a Stanley Cup championship with the Red Wings last season, his second as a professional. He has totaled five points (2-3-5) in 12 appearances with Detroit this season, giving him 18 points (10-8-18) in 42 regular season games with the Red Wings over the last three campaigns. After signing with the Red Wings as a free agent on Sept. 18, 2000, Williams made his pro debut with the AHL's Cincinnati Mighty Ducks during the 2000-01 season. He paced the Ducks, ranked second among AHL rookies and tied for 17th overall in the league with 69 points (24-45-69), in the process setting Cincinnati rookie records for goals, assists and points.

Despite playing only 52 games with the Ducks last season, Williams led the team with 23 goals and finished second with 27 assists and 50 points, earning a spot in the 2002 AHL All-Star Game. He scored his first NHL goal versus Toronto's Corey Schwab on March 6, 2002, and tallied six goals in his final eight regular season contests with Detroit last season.

Eldred, 28, has appeared in 363 professional contests during his six-year career, recording 80 points (26-54-80) and 892 penalty minutes. He has gone scoreless in 10 career AHL games with Kentucky, Milwaukee, Bridgeport and Cleveland. In addition to a one-game stint with Cleveland, Eldred has played 19 games for the East Coast Hockey League's Toledo Storm this season, collecting seven points (2-5-7) and 58 penalty minutes.

Both players will be available to the Griffins tonight when they visit the Hershey Bears at 7:30 p.m.
