Erie SeaWolves News Release
The SeaWolves, behind a stellar Double-A debut by lefty Adam Wilk, took down the Altoona Curve 3-1, avoiding a sweep on Wednesday night at Blair County Ballpark/
The SeaWolves struck first in the top of the second inning against Altoona starter Justin Wilson. Billy Nowlin snapped a three-game hitless streak with a leadoff single. Kyle Peter singled after back-to-back strikeouts putting runners on the corners for Alden Carrithers. Carrithers singled to left, scoring Nowlin for a 1-0 lead.
The Howlers extended the lead in the fourth. Nowlin led off with a single for his second hit of the game and got to second on an error by Jim Negrych in left. Andy Bouchie doubled down the left field line, scoring Nowlin for a 2-0 lead. Bouchie would later come home to score on an error to make it 3-0.
Altoona broke up the shutout in the bottom of the ninth against Lester Oliveros. Chase d'Arnaud led off, walked and advanced to second on a stolen base. With one out, Andrew Lambo doubled home d'Arnaud making it a two-run game at 3-1. Oliveros then induced back-to-back game ending groundouts from Matt Hague and Jordy Mercer ending the game, picking up his 11th save.
The story of the night was Wilk, who was called up from Lakeland on Tuesday to take over Thad Weber's vacated spot in the rotation. Wilk faced one over the minimum in the first three innings allowing just a walk to Mercer.
The lone hit Wilk gave up was a two-out single in the fourth by Hague. Following the Hague single, Wilk went on to retire 10 consecutive batters before Miles Durham led off the eighth and reached on an error. The southpaw then retired the final three hitters of the inning, including ending his day with a strikeout of Jose De Los Santos.
Wilk (1-0) earned the win tossing eight scoreless innings, allowing one hit with a walk and three strikeouts.
Wilk, the Tigers 11th round selection of the 2009 June draft, is now a combined 10-5 with Lakeland and Erie.
The SeaWolves continue their final road trip of the season on Thursday night against the Akron Aeros at Canal Park.7:05 First Pitch. Righty Anthony Shawler (4-2, 4.83 ERA) takes the mound for Erie against RHP Alex White (7-7, 2.44 ERA).
