Richmond Flying Squirrels News Release
RICHMOND, VA - The Reading Phillies turned back the Richmond Flying Squirrels, 4-2, in front of the eighth capacity crowd of 9,560 on the season on Wednesday night at The Diamond.
After striking out the side in the first inning, Reading righty Austin Hyatt found trouble in the second. He walked Thomas Neal leading off the inning, and conceded a single to Sharlon Schoop a batter later. Hyatt issued his second walk of the inning to Clay Timpner to load the bases with one out. Tyler La Torre struck out, but Squirrels' left-hander Jake Stevens aided his own cause with a two-run single through the right-side of the infield. Stevens' first professional hit put the Squirrels in front, 2-0.
An inning-opening walk issued by Stevens to Timo Perez in the third led to a four-run frame for the R-Phils. An out later, Tagg Bozied singled to put runners at the corners. John Suomi sent a hard grounder to second base for what appeared to be a double play chance. However, Nick Noonan couldn't handle the ball, and everybody was safe including Perez scoring on the error. Cody Overbeck followed with an RBI single to tie the game, 2-2. Stevens then uncorked three wild pitches that allowed both Suomi and Overbeck to score, giving the R-Phils a 4-2 advantage.
Stevens (4-3) retired after five innings, conceding four runs - two earned - on five hits. He was saddled with the loss in his first start of the season, walking two and striking out two.
Hyatt worked into the sixth inning for the victory, his first at the Double-A level. He limited the Squirrels to two runs on five hits. He walked two and struck out nine in the win.
Matt German worked a scoreless inning of relief for Reading and Jason Anderson closed it out for the save, working a perfect 2 1/3 innings. Right-hander Mitch Lively worked four scoreless innings of relief in the loss for Richmond.
The Squirrels will travel to Altoona, PA, to play a four-game series against the Altoona Curve (Pittsburgh Pirates) at Blair Count Ballpark. Prior to the four-game series, the two clubs will complete their suspended game from July 12th. The game will resume at 5:30 PM, with the Squirrels leading 6-3 in the bottom of the fourth inning.
