Lake Erie Crushers News Release
AVON, Ohio -- The Lake Erie Crushers scattered six hits on Friday evening, and were shutout for the second game in a row, as they fell to the Washington Wild Things, 7-0, at All Pro Freight Stadium.
The loss for the Crushers (8-14) was their third in their last four games, while the win for the Wild Things (10-15) snapped a four-game losing streak.
Lake Erie was silenced by Washington right-hander Luke Wilkins (2-1), who went the distance in the complete game shutout, allowing six hits while fanning seven along the way.
The Crushers stranded seven base runners on the night, including four in scoring position.
Both sides struggled at the plate early on, as they exchanged scoreless innings through the first three frames, until the Wild Things plated a pair of runs in the top of the fourth inning. CJ Beatty drove in the first run, winning a 10-pitch battle against Rob Blanc (0-1), with a RBI double to right center, and he scored moments later on Sam Mende's double down the line in right.
Washington added four more runs in the fifth inning to pull away. Jeudy Valdez started the inning with a double, moved to third on John Fidanza's sacrifice bunt, and scored as Austin Wobrock reached on Cody Stevens's errant throw at short. Two batters later, Carter Bell blasted a three-run homer over the wall in left to cap the inning.
The Wild Things used the long ball again in the top of the sixth inning to score their final run of the night. With nobody on and one out, Lee Orr smashed a solo homer to left, his fifth of the season.
Blanc took the loss for the Crushers, allowing a pair of runs on three hits over four innings and struck out five batters in the process. Three Crusher relievers saw action on the night, including Matt Brankle and Daniel DeSimone who both tossed scoreless innings in relief.
Five Crushers hit safely on the night, including Jose Barraza, who had two of Lake Erie's three doubles on the night, going 2-for-4. He was also the only Crusher to reach third base on the evening. Juan Sanchez went 1-for-4, and has now hit safely in six straight games.
The Crushers will continue their three-game series with the Washington Wild Things at All Pro Freight Stadium on Saturday night. Right-hander Hunter Adkins (0-1, 1.46) will start for the Crushers, while the Wild Things will throw right-hander Matt Sergey (1-3, 3.58). The first pitch is scheduled for 7:05 PM.
