
Beach Bums Power Past Slammers

Traverse City, MI- A two-run homer by Traverse City (14-9) LF Brandon Jacobs in the sixth inning allows the Beach Bums to surge ahead for good against the Joliet Slammers on Friday night on their way to a 3-1 win.After a scoreless first three innings, the Slammers pushed a run across in the fourth frame. With one out DH Russell Moldenhauer singled. 3B Mike Garza doubled to drive in Moldenhauer , and advanced to third on the throw home. He would be stranded at third. The Slammers led 1-0 after the top of the fourth inning.
The Beach Bums struggled to get anything going against pitcher Aaron Vaughn until the fourth inning. With one out 1B Yazy Arbelo singled and was move to third by a Jacobs double to left. With two in scoring position, RF Reggie Jackson hit a sacrifice fly to center, scoring Arbelo, tying the game at 1-1.
The Beach Bums untied the contest in the sixth inning. With one out Arbelo singled, and with one on Jacobs took a 2-1 pitch from Vaughn over the left field fence. That homer put the Beach Bums up 3-1 after six.
That lead would ultimately hold for Traverse City. The Slammers biggest threat came in the eighth inning. Against new pitcher Chuck Ghysels, 1B Nate Roberts and RF Phil Bates walked. But Moldenhauer struck out and Garza flew out to right, ending the Slammers scoring bid.
Vaughn (0-4) tossed seven innings, giving up three runs on seven hits and no walks while striking out six in the loss. David Kubiak pitched a scoreless inning in relief. The loss snapped the Slammers three-game winning streak.
Notes: Aaron Vaughn pitched seven innings, his longest outing of the year...He also tied a season high with six strikeouts... The Slammers pitching staff allowed an earned run for the first time since the ninth inning Sunday, June 7th, a span of 28 innings... The Slammers went 0-for-6 with runners in scoring position...The Slammers are now 2-7 when they score the first run...Joliet is 1-6 on turf...Sam Klein recorded his first professional hit in fifth inning...The Slammers will be back in action against the Beach Bums on Saturday which the first pitch at 5:05CT.
