Evansville Otters News Release
Marion, IL- The Evansville Otters (17-8) traveled to Marion, IL for the first game of a three game series against the Southern Illinois Miners (16-9), but the Miners got the best of them in Game One thanks to Miners' starter Matt Bywater who threw the second no-hitter in franchise history as the Otters fell 3-0.
The Otters defense flashed the leather in the first three innings with centerfielder Ronnie Richardson and Nik Balog, the first basemen, both making great plays in the field, highlighted by Richardson's diving catch at the warning track to save a run to end the bottom of the second inning.
However, with the bats silent through the first three innings the Miners scored a pair when starter, Trevor Walch, got a little bit out of control and walked two batters while also allowing a single to load the bases. Miners' right fielder Jon Minucci singled right back up the middle to give the Miners a 2-0 lead after four innings.
Bywater retired the first 13 batters he faced before Chris Sweeney worked an eight pitch walk, but then finished off the Otters in the fifth. The score would stay 2-0 in favor of the Miners until the bottom of the eighth when they plated a run after a leadoff triple and a one out single.
That was more than enough for Bywater who walked Cory Urquhart after striking out the leadoff batter and then put away Richardson by inducing a popout to shallow right field. The only thing that stood between him and the no-hitter was Kurt Wertz Jr., but the lefty on lefty matchup favored the pitcher who froze Wertz Jr on a slider to cement the Miners' second ever no hitter.
Bywater struck out ten in the no-hitter and walked just two while Trevor Walch is the hard luck loser, allowing just three runs in eight innings of work as his record drops to 2-2. The Otters and Miners are right back at it tomorrow night when Efrain Nieves (3-1) takes the mound against a pitcher who has yet to be announced for the Miners.
The Game is scheduled to start at 6:05 pm CDT with the pregame show with Jake Donnelly on 91.5 FM WUEV scheduled to start at 5:45 pm CDT.
The Otters will not be back home until next Wednesday, which is the 100th Anniversary Game at Bosse Field. The Otters will play host to the Windy City Thunderbolts for the historic event with the gates opening at a special time of 5:00 pm CDT.
