Joliet Slammers News Release
Joliet, IL- The pitching staff of the Joliet Slammers (11-13) throws back-to-back shutouts, taking both games in a doubleheader to sweep the Washington Wild Things on Thursday night.
The Slammers scored first in game one against last week's Frontier League Pitcher of the Week, Ernesto Zaragoza. LF JD Williams led off the third inning with a single and moved to second on an error by the catcher. 1B Nate Roberts moved him to third, and DH Russell Moldenhauer drove in Williams with a sacrifice fly to center. That put the Slammers up 1-0 after the third frame.
The one run would be all pitcher Jordan Guth needed. He tossed seven shutout innings, scattering four hits and walking three. The Wild Things threatened in the fifth inning loading the bases with one out, but SS Austin Wobrock lined out to Roberts at first, who stepped on the bag to double off C John Fidanza to end the inning.
The Slammers scored one more run in the sixth frame. RF Hunter Ridge doubled and was later driven in on a two-bagger by C Jack Cleary, putting Joliet up 2-0, which would ultimately be the final score. Guth (3-3) earned the win, pitching the first complete game shutout of the season for a Joliet pitcher
Kevin Walter carried the torch in game two, tossing six scoreless innings while striking out nine. The Slammers pitching staff did not allow an earned run in the series.
Joliet's offense was quiet until the seventh inning. SS Alfredo Rodriguez hit an infield single to lead off the frame. Ridge moved him to second. New pitcher Richie Morowski walked catcher Chris Matthews intentionally, and Casper coaxed a walk as well. But Williams struck out and White grounded into a fielder's choice, sending the game to extras.
Williams redeemed himself in a big way, keeping the score tied in the top of the eighth when he threw out a CF Daniel Poma trying to score from second base on a single to left for the third out of the inning.
The Slammers would close out the game in the ninth inning. With one out, Cleary pinch hit for Matthews and singled. After Casper flew out to center, Williams hit a line drive into the left field corner. Cleary raced from first to home, scoring the game winning run, allowing Joliet to win in walk-off fashion, 1-0.
This series sweep concludes the 5-4 home stand for the Slammers as they travel to Traverse City to take on the Beach Bums for a weekend series. First pitch for game one on Friday scheduled for 6:05pm Central Time. You can catch the action on http://www.jolietslammers.com/gameday/slammervision/.
