Wild Things Take Game Three from Schamburg

Schaumburg, IL - The Washington Wild Things, presented by Washington Financial, took the three game series wish an 8-7 victory against the Schaumburg Boomers Sunday.

The Wild Things wasted no time, grabbing an early 2-0 lead in the top of the first. Center fielder Robbie Garvey struck a one-out double, which was followed by an RBI single by shortstop AJ Nunziato. It was Nunziato's second RBI as a Wild Thing, earning his first in the previous game. Nunziato would eventually scorie on an error by left fielder Sean Mahley for the second run of the inning.

Schaumburg fought back, and took the lead in the bottom of the third inning. The Boomers added three runs on three hits in the inning, taking a 3-2 lead after three.

Designated hitter Taylor Oldham led off the top of the fifth with a double to get things started for the Wild Things. Second baseman Matt McConnell followed and sacfrificed Oldham to third. Garvey drove Oldham home on a sacrifice fly to center field. The score was knotted at three after the fifth.

However, the Boomers recaptured the lead in the bottom of the fifth, 4-3. An RBI double by second baseman Drew Heithoff brough home right fielder Nate Baumann.

The Wild Things, however, broke out in the top of the sixth, as the teams continued to trade blows. Three consecutive hits allowed Washington to regain the lead, 7-3. Shain Stoner highlighted the inning as he ripped a double to bring home Rick Devereaux from second. It was Stoner's 23rd RBI of the season, a team high.

Starter Gary Lee, who will represent the Wild Things at the All-Star game, went five innings in a limited outing. Lee, who was limited to a pitch count, allowed four runs on eight hits.

As was the case in every game in this series, both teams went back-and-forth, losing the lead and then retaking it.

Schaumburg followed the trend in the seventh inning, when they tied the game 7-7. An RBI single by Karexon Sanchez tied things up in the bottom of the seventh.

Schaumburg's closer Patrick Mincey came started the ninth inning. Garvey led off for Washington with a sharply hit single. A sacrifice bunt by Nunziato advanced Garvey to second to put the tying run in scoring position. Devereaux followed with a clutch single up the middle to bring home Garvey to take the lead!

Washington went into the bottom of the ninth leading 8-7.

Reliever Chandlar Barnard stayed in the game to try to lock up a victory for the Wild Things.

Mike Valdez led things off with a double for the Boomers. A sacrifice bunt by Jereme Milons moved Valdez to third with one out. Barnard got the next batter Sanchez to groundout to the shortstop, and Valdez stayed put at third. Mahley followed, trying to tie the game with a base hit. However, Barnard hung tough, and got Mahley to groundout to third to seal the deal!

Barnard finished with 2.2 innings pitched, allowing four hits and striking out one. Barnard earned his second victory of the year with the Wild Things.

When the All-Star Break begins Monday, Gary Lee will represent the Wild Things. The All-Star game will be played in Normal, Illinois. Washington will return home on Friday, July 13th to begin a six game homestand.
