Shields Pitches Complete Game in First Pro Start

River City Rascals News Release

Crestwood, Ill. - Rascals skipper Steve Brook was looking for someone to start the final game of the first half, out the unlikely choice could not have been much more perfect. Rookie Doug Shields, making his first pro start after nine appearances out of the bullpen, tossed nine innings of four hit baseball, keeping the Thunderbolts off balance while allowing just one unearned run and striking out 10 in a Rascal 3-1 win over second-place Windy City to take the series 2-1.

The Rascals (26-22) gave Shields a 1-0 lead after manufacturing a run in the first. Eric Williams started the game with a walk, stole second, and scored on a Jason Patton single. Shields would strike out the first two he faced in a perfect first before a Ben Hewett suicide squeeze bunt scored Josh Workman from third after he started the inning with a bunt single.

Shields got out of a bases loaded jam in the third with just one run allowed and surrendered four hits the rest of the way.

River City plated an insurance run in the eighth after loading the bases with one out. Hewett pushed another suicide squeeze bunt up the first base line that scored Workman again from third to push the lead to 3-1.

The complete game for Shields was the first for River City this season, and the third start of the series to last eight or more innings.

River City heads into the all-star break at 26-22, three games behind first place Schaumburg in the west division standings. The Rascals open a weekend series with Lake Erie following the four-day break.
