Joliet Slammers News Release
JOLIET SLAMMERS (19-28) vs. NORMAL CORNBELTERS (16-29)
Sunday, July 8 - 2:05 p.m. CT
Silver Cross Field - Joliet, IL
Game #48 - Home Game #27 (19-28), (9-17)
RHP #4 Steven Maxwell (4-4, 3.83 ERA) vs. RHP #17 Tyler Lavigne (3-3, 4.32 ERA)
Last time out.
The Slammers lost 6-4 last night. Normal got things started right away with two runs in the first inning, one scoring on fielding error, and the other on an RBI single by Sam Judah, one of three hits he picked up. Joliet tied things up at two in the fourth on a fielder's choice and an RBI single by Matt Mirabal. The fifth inning was unkind to Joliet. Four runs came across for Normal courtesy of singles by Judah and Chico Gomez, while Tyler Wiesmeyer walked with the bases loaded. Brian Smith entered in relief but injured himself before he completed an at-bat, while Sean Estand hurt himself diving after a ground ball. Daniel Carela later injured himself in relief, as well. The Slammers bounced back in the home half when Patrick Norris tagged a leadoff homer. They added a run in the eighth when Norris reached on a fielder's choice and David Fox scored, giving the game its final 6-4 tally.
For Starters.
Steven Maxwell is coming off a loss to the Rockford RiverHawks on July 2 as he went six innings, giving up four runs (three earned) on six hits. He struck out five while only walking one in the outing. Maxwell put up outstanding numbers at Division One powerhouse Texas Christian University and got drafted twice, once by the Minnesota Twins, and once by the Chicago Cubs. Maxwell's junior season at TCU saw him tally an 11-2 record with a 2.70 ERA. Maxwell tossed 103.1 innings that season and struck out 93 batters while only walking 34 in 18 starts. He was a 2010 2nd-team Louisville Slugger all-American, the 2010 Mountain West Conference Pitcher of the Year, a 2010 1st-team All-Mountain West Conference selection, a 2010 ABCA 2nd-team All-Midwest Region selection and he made the 2010 NCAA Fort Worth Regional All-Tournament Team. His pitching helped lead TCU to the College World Series. Maxwell was drafted by the Minnesota Twins in the 12th round of the 2010 draft but elected to return to TCU for his senior season. Injuries shortened Maxwell's senior campaign but the right-hander still went 5-1 with a 3.13 ERA in 11 starts. He was named to the All-Mountain West 2nd Team at the end of the season. Maxwell finished his collegiate career with a 21-5 record and a 3.43 ERA. He was chosen by the Chicago Cubs in the 37th round of the 2011 draft.
Going for the series win in the rubber match.
With a win tonight the Slammers would clinch this three-game series against Normal. The Slammers last won a series June 20-22 when they took two of three from Schaumburg. Joliet is 2-4 in rubber matches.
