Washington Wild Things News Release

Washington, PA-The Washington Wild Things, presented by Washington Financial, dropped the first game of their series against the Southern Illinois Miners, 7-1.

Southern Illinois quickly took the lead in the top of the first inning and played a strong game defensively, not allowing Washington to capitalize on key opportunities.

The Wild Things scored their only run of the game in the bottom of the sixth inning. With one out, third baseman Doug Thennis hit a triple through the gap. A sacrifice fly to left field by designated hitter Mitch Dening allowed Thennis to score and put the Wild Things on the board.

Gary Lee was efficient, going seven strong innings on the mound. The Wild Things' right-handed pitcher allowed five runs (only two earned) on six hits, walked no batters, and struck out three. Steven Grife made his first appearance of the season and pitched the final two innings, allowing two runs (both earned) on three hits. Grife walked two and struck out four.

Miners' starting pitcher David Harden lasted seven innings and allowed one run (earned) on eight hits. Harden struck out three batters and allowed no walks. Ryan Quigley pitched one inning in relief and allowed one hit.
